Microsoft announced at the Game Developers Conference that it will add the ability for game developers to turn Xbox One retail consoles into test kits for apps made for the Windows 10 operating system sometime in the second half of 2015.

The announcement was made during a panel at this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Microsoft has been promising since August 2013 that it would enable game developers to unlock retail Xbox One consoles to help them make games for the system at some point, but has mostly been silent on how this would work since then. It would appear that the plan to allow cross-pay and cross-publishing Xbox One and Windows 10 games has finally caused Microsoft to start talking more about this long awaited feature.

Microsoft revealed on Wednesday that 17 current and upcoming ID@Xbox games for the Xbox One will be released on Windows 10.
