The research firm NPD Group said that sales of Sony's PlayStation 4 console beat Microsoft's Xbox One in March, but Microsoft said that sales of the Xbox One are still outpacing those of the Xbox 360 at the same point during the previous console's lifecycle.

The NPD Group did not offer specific hardware unit numbers for any consoles during March in the US, and neither Sony nor Microsoft chose to reveal those numbers on their own. NPD did state that sales for consoles were $311.1 million in March, down 21% compared to March 2014. Overall US game retail sales (hardware, software and accessories) were $963.7 million in March, down 6% from a year ago. The numbers do not account for sales of digital games.

Electronic Arts' latest first person shooter Battlefield: Hardline was the best selling retail game in the US during March, with the PlayStation 4 exclusive game Bloodborne coming in second. Grand Theft Auto V, the Nintendo Wii U exclusive Mario Party 10, and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare filled out the rest of the top five list.
