The best racing games for Xbox One

If you like to tear up the tarmac on your Xbox One then you're in luck because there are some great racing games available for Microsoft's console.

Racers aren't for everyone, but for those who love them, often little else will do. Here we're taking a look at the very best that racing fans can get their hands on for the Xbox One.

Forza Horizon 2

The arcade styled sibling to the serious, circuit racer, Forza Horizon 2 is arguably the finest this genre has to offer on the Xbox One until Forza 6 comes along. You're in Southern Europe, participating in the Horizon Festival, a mix of music, parties, street and off road racing. The central theme is simple; enter championships, win them, unlock the Horizon Finale, become the Champion.

But since this is Forza it's not just that simple. You only need to win a certain amount of championships to unlock the Horizon Finale, but there are tons more to enter on the side. The expansive map covers areas of France and Italy and has plenty besides racing to keep you occupied. Bonus boards, barn finds, bucket list challenges and more awaits away from the races.

Forza Horizon 2 has also spurned a couple of expansions. Storm Island is an off road themed pack accessed from Nice harbor in the main game, while Fast and Furious is a standalone based on a portion of the main map and tied in with the popular movie series.

With hundreds of cars on offer, challenges galore and a huge map, Forza Horizon 2 is an essential for the Xbox petrolhead.

Project Cars

Project Cars is a racing title in a similar vein to Microsoft's own Forza Motorsport series. But while Forza Motorsport 5 was a disappointment for a few key reasons, Project Cars is nothing of the sort. It didn't have an easy birth, with a number of delays leading up to its eventual launch proving frustrating for eager Xbox racers.

It's big, it's ambitious and it's absolutely gorgeous. Forza may have the edge on the visuals, but Project Cars is still a looker. It's had to tone down to 900p, however, in order to achieve 60fps. You get 16 cars on track at once, you get a decent variety of cars to race around in and a fantastic selection of real world circuits.

It's the circuits which are probably the star of the show. Project Cars doesn't just have the big, famous tracks like Silverstone, Dubai, Le Mans, but it also has some less well known tracks, like Cadwell Park in the UK. And if you want a challenge, definitely head to Cadwell. It's a circuit best known for motorcycle racing since it's very narrow, technical and challenging,

The early days of Project Cars were dogged by bugs, but most of those seem to have been ironed out now. For folks looking for a dose of realism, it's one to go for.

F1 2015

If you're a fan of the world's premiere single-seater series, 2015 brings the first official Formula One game on the Xbox One. F1 2015 is a continuation of the Codemasters series that's packed with all the licensing you could shake a stick at. Every circuit on the F1 calendar is represented, all the current teams, drivers and liveries, and it's the closest most of us will ever get to the real thing.

It's not perfect, by any stretch, with limitations having crept in to the single-player that haven't been present in previous games. There's no proper career mode, for one. But it's still an exciting racer and a good choice for F1 fans. Even if it is the only choice.

Riptide GP2

This ID@Xbox title has a different flavor to the other games in this roundup but it's still a full-on racer. Riptide GP2 is developed by Vector Unit and is a Grade A title on mobile, PC and Xbox. You race a variety of Jetskis across different and challenging circuits in either a career mode or multiplayer.

For the Xbox One the graphics were bumped to 1080p resolution and 60fps so it looks great, is smooth as silk and a really fun game to play. If you're looking for something with depth then you're probably in the wrong place. But it's fun, that's what we love, and at a fraction of the asking price of everything else on this list.

Coming soon

Forza Motorsport 6

We didn't include Forza Motorsport 5 on the main list for a couple of very important reasons. Firstly, Forza 6 is due on September 15 (or September 10 for Ultimate Edition buyers), so there's little reason to consider buying the older game right now. Then there's the fact that it's just not that good. Where Forza 5 is arguably the lowest point of the series to date, Forza 6 looks set to be the highest.

Forza 5 felt rushed. There just wasn't enough in it. No weather, no change in lighting, nowhere near enough circuits. It felt like Microsoft did whatever it needed to do to have Forza available for the early days of the Xbox Ones life.

We've had chance to preview what is basically the finished item at Gamescom 2015 and everything that was good about Forza 5 has been retained, made better, and everything that was missing is now here. Dynamic weather, racing at night, many more circuits, all present. Along with upping the numbers to 24 cars on track at once and retaining 1080p 60fps performance. Forza 6 is going to be a console seller. No doubt.

Assetto Corsa

Assetto Corsa is another favorite of the sim/realism fan but as yet hasn't made it to console. It mixes a realistic feeling experience with stunning visuals in its current form on the PC. And from what little we've seen so far of the console adaptation, that's coming across to the Xbox One.

Not much is actually known about the console version besides a 2016 launch date and that it will contain all the base tracks of the PC version as well as the full, laser scanned Nurburgring Nordschleife. Assetto Corsa is one of the finest racing games on any platform. Definitely keep an eye out for it.
