Pair up: Apex Legends introducing duos into game for the first time

Crypto in Apex Legends

For those who don't like groups or flying solo.

Apex Legends typically forces you to play in a trio, and occasionally let you play solo, but what if you only have one friend to play with? Soon you'll have your chance.

Respawn announced Tuesday that a limited-time duos mode will be coming to the game starting on Nov. 5. The company revealed the mode in a video posted to Twitter, which depicts Crypto and Mirage, two characters that were at each other's throats in the Season 3 reveal.

No other details have been revealed, but we can expect that each round will maintain the 60-player cap, which means there will 30 teams of two. Players can also likely expect challenges that'll encourage them to try out the new mode. We also don't know how long the mode will be available for.

While Apex Legends was built with teams of three in mind — creating a balance in the game where players can heal, cover, and respawn each other — the solos mode gave players the opportunity to not deal with teams of strangers. This opened up new possibilities for the game, including new ways to use characters and new strategies. The duos mode will likely do the same.

The announcement comes a day after EA (which owns Respawn) discussed during a quarterly earnings call that the game had been played by 70 million players since launch. The free Battle Royale has been a huge success for the company and is expected to hit more platforms in the future. EA also said it hopes to invest in a competitive esports league for the game.

Watch almost an hour of Wasteland 3 gameplay right here

Watch almost an hour of first-time gameplay from Wasteland 3, an upcoming CRPG from InXile Entertainment.

Wasteland 3 is an upcoming classic-style CRPG from InXile Entertainment, who were recently acquired by Xbox Game Studios. While Wasteland 3 is promised to hit PS4, PC, and Xbox One, future entries in the Wasteland franchise could be exclusive to Microsoft platforms like Windows, Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, and Project xCloud.

Wasteland predates the Fallout franchise, and helped inspire a range of apocalyptic RPGs throughout the decades. InXile reacquired the rights to the franchise a few years ago, crowdfunding Wasteland 2 and now Wasteland 3, before joining up with Microsoft and Xbox.

Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3 takes the series to the bitter climbs of Colorado, trading the barren deserts that typify the previous games for a nuclear winter. Armed with a war rig looking like something straight out of Mad Max, your team of Rangers charts across the land, helping out where they can (or not, the choice is yours).

Wasteland 3 takes the turn-based strategic gameplay made famous by the likes of XCOM and injects some deeper RPG flavor, complete with a V.A.T.S.-like precision targeting system players of Fallout and The Outer Worlds will find familiar. You can even occasionally use the Kodiak vehicle's railgun in combat sometimes, if there's enough room for it to drive around.

Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3 seems like a huge step up in every department for InXile, also known for the Bard's Tale franchise. The visuals are far more detailed, crisp, and exciting, complete with vibrant character acting and some truly twisted writing, InXile could be on to a big win here.

Take a watch of our gameplay above, and tell us what you think.

Wasteland 3 launches on Xbox One, PC, and PS4 some time in Spring 2020. It's also hitting Xbox Game Pass on day one.

The Outer Worlds Shrink Ray concept art

Check out a complete list of every unique gun and science weapon.

The Outer Worlds is rife with wacky weapons that have some sort of gimmick to them, whether it be a Shrink Ray that quite literally shrinks your enemy or melee weapon that rearranges their face. Obsidian calls these Science weapons, and they're easily some of the coolest — and rarest — in the game. We've compiled every unique gun and science weapon you can find in The Outer Worlds along with their locations so you know exactly where to look. All science weapons can be obtained naturally through the quest "Weapons From The Void," and vendors can sell unique items from time to time.

Note: Because The Outer Worlds just launched, this list is a work-in-progress as more players discover new science weapons and where they are found in the game. We'll continually add to it and ensure that it is up to date.

You can find this if you do the quest "The Secret People." Make sure you check every room in the house, including that one weird one on that top floor.

Ubisoft wants to see cross-play support in its games with PvP

Warriors clash in For Honor

Games like For Honor and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint could see cross-play added in the future.

What you need to know

  • Ubisoft held its latest financial earnings report and conference call.
  • During the conference call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated the company is working on cross-play support for all its games with PvP.
  • Currently, only a couple of Ubisoft games support cross-play.

Ubisoft is one of the largest video game publishers in the industry however, at the moment only two Ubisoft games support any form of cross-play: Brawlhalla and the World Dance Floor mode in Just Dance. That may be changing in the near future. Ubisoft held a conference call accompanying its most recent financial reports. During the conference call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that Ubisoft is looking into adding cross-play for its future games.

"Our goal is to put cross-play on all the PvP games we have, over time," Guillemot stated. "That's well on the way." Ubisoft has a full slew of games with online player vs player (PvP) modes, so there's plenty of games to benefit from the support. Many major games are starting to support full cross-play between platforms, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Fortnite and Dauntless.

Ubisoft has an interesting year ahead, having delayed practically its entire slate of games that had release dates or release windows. Ubisoft also recently released Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, which, despite placing well in the September 2019 NPD charts, has been deemed a dissapointment commercially by the company. Players can nevertheless look forward to fixes, improvements and more content for the game, as there is a roadmap from the developers.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a military shooter set in a diverse and hostile open world. Players take on the Wolves, elite special ops soldiers just as skilled as any other Ghost. The game can be played solo or with up to four players.

Rainbow Six Siege hits record active players, boosting Ubisoft Q2 earnings

Rainbow Six Siege Nokk

What you need to know

  • Ubisoft reports ongoing success for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, hitting record active players last quarter.
  • The title has seen increased player spending, with the ongoing Halloween event boasting the strongest revenue-per-session ratio since Outbreak.

Ubisoft reports a impressive quarter for Rainbow Six Siege, with record-high players and increased spending.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege continues to prove its successes, positioned among Ubisoft's top titles of the generation. The hit tactical shooter further scales via its tri-monthly updates, nearing half a decade of post-launch support. And with Ubisoft detailing its Q2 financials, Rainbow Six Siege retains dominance atop the publisher's lineup.

Ubisoft reports record-high monthly active users (MAUs) amid Q2 earnings while surpassing 50 million players. It signals the game's healthiest following to date, proving particularly valuable as Year 5 approaches. "The game passed the 50 million registered players mark in September and its solid momentum over the quarter was spurred by the July event Showdown and the new season Operation Ember Rise in September," said Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frédérick Duguet.

Rainbow Six Siege Amaru

Growth also pairs with higher year-over-year player recurring investment (PRI) as spending rises across the game ecosystem. The uptick covers sales of all digital items, including in-game cosmetics, annual passes, and other premium purchases.

Duguet specifically outlined the success of its ongoing Doktor's Curse Halloween event, while framing its Battle Pass as vital moving forward. "The current Halloween event is seeing the strongest revenue-per-session ratio since the Outbreak expansion in March 2018 and a robust year-on-year engagement progression. We recently introduced the Mini Battle Pass and will launch the full version during an upcoming season."

The publisher indicates a bright future for Rainbow Six Siege esports, illustrated with the recent Six Major Raleigh. The tournament saw a 27 percent increase in viewing hours, against the Six Major Paris 2018. The news drops as the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals makes an Asia debut next month, headed to Tokoname, Japan.

Ubisoft reports broader €334.1 million sales for the company in Q2, although down 9 percent year-over-year. Rainbow Six Siege played a decisive role in gains, alongside the return of Assassin's Creed with Origins and Odyssey.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege

Addictive, challenging shooter action

Ubisoft's hit shooter is hotter than ever, touting tense tactical gameplay, and regular free updates. With millions of players in 2019, Rainbow Six isn't slowing down.

Some weapon balance changes are coming in the next Gears 5 update

Kait executes a Swarm soldier with the Breaker mace

Lancer damage at range is being changed up in the competitive modes.

What you need to know

  • The Coalition has shared some details on the next update for Gears 5.
  • This update will see Lancer damage at range reduced to better balance the gameplay.
  • Only Core modes are being changed, while Arcade will remain the same.
  • You can grab Gears 5 for $47 from Amazon.

Some players are currently unhappy with the balance of different weapons in the competitive modes in Gears 5. As part of a plan to address these issues, The Coalition has detailed the changes coming in the next update for Gears 5. Here's the exact details on how the Lancer will be changing in competitive modes:

  • Active reload rate of fire increase reduced by 50% (was 20%, now 10%)
  • Long range damage reduced by 20% (damage done beyond 30m)

This isn't a huge change, rather it's simply meant to give players hit by Lancer fire a tiny bit more to time to respond or think. There's also some global weapon tuning changes that will arrive in the next update:

  • Aim assist (adhesion) effect strength reduced for all weapons by 25% at all ranges up to 30m (beyond which there is no adhesion)

It it important to note that this update does not affect Arcade and naturally does not affect any PvE modes like Campaign, Horde or Escape. Our Senior Xbox Editor Jez Corden recently wrote about how Gears 5 hasn't lived up to expectations as a live service. Hopefully this update is well received and is part of the changes needed to make fans happy and help the game succeed in the long term. Gears 5 debuted at the #7 spot on the overall September 2019 NPD charts and is included in Xbox Game Pass.

Here's how to use your own headphones with Xbox One (and why you should)

$

Headphones

You don't have to purchase a sometimes very expensive gaming headset to get the most from your Xbox One audio experience, especially not if you've already invested in a set of good, sometimes expensive headphones. There are some features you'll lose, but ultimately it might well be the way to go for you.

Products used in this guide

How to connect your headphones to the Xbox One

Xbox One audio adapter

This part is super simple as long as you're using the more recent versions of the Xbox One controller. These have the 3.5mm headset jack in the bottom, and so to use them all you have to do is plug the headphones into the controller.

If you're using a first-generation Xbox One controller, there is, unfortunately, no headphone jack. As such, you'll need to invest in a Stereo Headset Adapter. It connects to the bottom of your controller with your headphones hooking up to the bottom of the adapter.

You also get added handy features like volume adjust, chat/game audio mix adjust, and a big old mute button. Even on the later versions of the Xbox One controller (with the headset jack), you can gain a fair bit from using one of these.

The official Microsoft one is no longer sold new, however well-known headset maker, Turtle Beach has an excellent alternative.

This adapter not only connects headphones directly to the older style Xbox One controller but puts great features like chat/game mix and total volume control into the palm of your hand.

How to control audio without the adapter

Xbox audio controls

If you don't have inline volume controls, you'll have to control the audio on the console directly. It's not difficult, although with the latest update to the Xbox One dashboard, the audio controls are a little more hidden. Follow these steps:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  2. Scroll all the way to the right to system.
  3. Select audio.

You'll now have options for enabling and disabling any microphone attached, adjusting volume, mic monitoring and the mix of game audio to party chat.

Adding a microphone to your own headphones

Modmic Uni

There are some really easy, solid ways of adding a microphone to your headphones so you can indulge in a little party chat action on your Xbox One.

On worth investing in is the Antlion Modmic Uni. This is a microphone that you can clip to your headphones to create your own gaming headset. You use a splitter to attach the headphones and the microphone, so you can have essentially a full gaming headset plugged into your controller.

The bonus is that you can take the microphone off and then just keep on enjoying your headphones. Not all gaming headsets have a detachable microphone, so you really do get the best of both worlds.

So much to try

During the beta period, as Microsoft ramps up the associated app and service, Xbox Game Pass for PC costs just $5 per month. I'd argue that even at its full price of $10 it represents some of the best value deals in gaming, giving access to tons of games you'd otherwise have to buy separately.

Slipping in at the top spot we have The Outer Worlds, which by itself makes a month of Xbox Game Pass for PC totally worth it. Set in a distant colony controlled by corrupt corporations, you wake up from hyperspace deep sleep to find a civilization on the brink of collapse. Travel across various unique planets in a game where your decisions affect the outcome of every quest. Oh, and if you want, you can just kill every character in the entire game if that's to your liking.

Wolfenstein II remains a personal favorite. The satisfying shooting coalesces with great visuals, an intriguing and varied story, and stunning audio work to create something truly special.

Mutant Year Zero is another personal favorite. Despite having pretty wacky-looking characters and plenty of humor, the story is actually rather dark and deceptively well-realized. The combat is aggressive, but not what I'd consider unfair by any stretch, focusing a little more on positioning and tactics rather than luck-based hit percentages.

Finally, I have to give a shoutout to Moonlighter. If you're looking for something a little more light-hearted and easy-going, Moonlighter is a good choice. The combat is slick and well-executed, complete with a large RPG-style upgrade system that'll have you losing track of time with all its addictiveness.

You want the best Xbox One controller? THIS is the best Xbox controller.

Xbox Elite Series 2

To play games on the Xbox One, you'll need a controller. Microsoft's Xbox Elite Series 2 wireless controller is the best gamepad for the company's console. You can customize it to your needs, replace various components, and even remap buttons through an app for console and PC.

Best overall - Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

Xbox Elite Series 2

The Xbox One controller is incredibly comfortable to use for long periods. It's sturdy, and it generally feels great to hold and use. However, like all things, it has a lifespan, and more serious gamers can wear them out fairly quickly.

Then comes the Elite Series 2, the latest incarnation of Microsoft's professional-grade controller. It essentially keeps the same great design but improves just about everything else. The sticks are removable and more durable, as is the D-pad. There are paddles on the rear which can be mapped to any button on the controller using the companion app for Xbox One and Windows 10. The whole thing is covered with a soft-touch finish. There are hand-grips, and there are trigger stops.

Some may look at the price tag and declare that no controller is worth that much, and that's fine. To the people willing to pay top dollar, the Elite Controller is the very best around. It'll last many years longer than a regular controller and is packed with serious features. The Series 2 also adds Bluetooth into the mix, for easy wireless pairing with your Windows 10 PC.

Pros:

  • Excellent design
  • Great build quality
  • Custom button and paddle mapping
  • Changeable sticks and D-Pad
  • Bluetooth

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Heavier than a standard controller

Best Bluetooth - Microsoft Xbox One controller

Xbox One Controller

You honestly can't go wrong with the controller Microsoft bundled in the box with your Xbox console. Since the debut of the Xbox One S, it's had Bluetooth capabilities, which while unused on the Xbox One, comes in handy if you also like to dabble in some wire-free PC gaming.

The Xbox One controller design is arguably the best there has ever been on any platform, with its offset analog sticks and perfect size leading to many, many hours of comfortable gaming.

It works seamlessly with the PC, too, either wired or over Bluetooth. If you're not a fan of dumping AA batteries inside it, there's a play and charge kit available that transforms it into a rechargeable controller. And whether it's through the Design Lab or the ridiculous amount of special edition designs, there's a color combo that's perfect for you.

Pros:

  • Excellent design
  • Custom color combos available
  • Bluetooth for easy PC use
  • Great price

Cons:

  • Not rechargeable without extra purchase
  • Won't last as long as an Elite
  • Design Lab not available everywhere

Best for retro fans - Hyperkin Duke

Hyperkin Duke

Hyperkin and Xbox teamed up to revive the classic Xbox controller, known affectionately as the "Duke." If you weren't gaming on the first Xbox console, you're in for a real treat, even if it's absolutely massive by today's standards, hence the name.

It's still extremely well made and sports several modernizing refinements across the board, including 3.5mm audio and shoulder buttons. There's also a gorgeous OLED display in the center, which showcases the OG Xbox boot animation on every press. This controller is a stunner and well worth a place in any Xbox fan's home. It feels as though it came straight out of Microsoft's own labs.

It's a piece of gaming history brought back to life for modern gaming, and while it's absolutely beastly, long-time Xbox fans will adore it. It's impossible not to! And what better way to play those first-gen Xbox games on backward compatibility?

Pros:

  • Faithful design to the original
  • OLED display is a nice touch
  • Modernized with headset jack
  • It's the Duke!

Cons:

  • Very large
  • Only comes wired
  • Can be hard to get hold of at times

Best wired - Razer Wolverine Ultimate

Razer Wolverine Ultimate

The Wolverine is a fully customizable, wired (that's important for a lot of gamers who still prefer this over wireless) controller that's a variation on the standard design. You've got built-in hardware audio controls down the bottom, paddles on the rear, and RGB lighting around the Xbox button.

The Wolverine, as with the Xbox Elite, is targeted at the competitive scene — those who need a controller that not only has added durability but additional features such as those paddles, which can all be mapped to your own customized layout. Wired is also a better option for competitive play since the connection will be more reliable.

The included cable is long enough to allow you to sit far away from the screen if you wish, and it also means you're never going to run out of power when the going gets tough. The Wolverine also closely resembles Microsoft's own controller design, so it's comfortable to use for long periods.

Pros:

  • Excellent design
  • Best for competitive players
  • Long, braided cable
  • Customizable paddles and buttons
  • Integrated audio controls

Cons:

  • Paddle design is unusual
  • Fairly expensive
  • No option to use wirelessly with PC

If you just want a robust controller that costs as little as possible, you can't do better than Amazon's own brand Xbox One offering. It's inexpensive but well made and very pleasant to use.

It's not exactly the same size and shape as the regular Xbox One controller, but it's close. All the buttons are in the right place, and the headset jack is on the bottom. No frills, but great value.

It only comes wired, and you won't be able to remap any of its buttons, but it's a perfect budget or entry-level controller, and especially useful to give to the kids.

It is a little pricey, but if you play a ton of fighting games, it's a price worth paying to up your game to the next level.

Best racing wheel - Thrustmaster TS-XW

Thrustmaster TS-XW

For the serious virtual racer on Xbox One, you can't do better right now than this wheel. Thanks to a partnership with Sparco, the TS-XW is based on an actual racing wheel, trimmed in Alcantara, constructed entirely from metal, and with two large paddle shifters.

It's not for the faint at heart, and driving with this wheel gives you a bit of a workout. The pedals are lifelike and adjustable, and thanks to Thrustmaster's system, you can even swap out the wheel itself for a different design to use on the same base.

The rotation goes though a full 1,080 degrees, and if you hook it up to your PC, the Thrustmaster app will allow you to alter that to a custom value, so it applies to all your games. If you want realism, you'll find it right here.

Conclusion

There are so many excellent Xbox One controllers out there right now, including the one you get in the box with the console. Even better, there's a good choice for virtually any type of gamer.

The Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is the top dog, though, mixing the brilliant design of the standard controller with additional features and swappable parts, as well as a more durable, longer-lasting build.

But whether you're into racing games, fighting games, or want something a little more unique looking, there's something out there for you. It's a really great time to be an Xbox One gamer.

Terminator: Resistance Gameplay

Take down Skynet.

What you need to know

  • Terminator: Resistance is a first-person shooter for Xbox One and other platforms.
  • It's a single-player game set in the Terminator universe.
  • It follows the Future War scenario as shown in only a few films.
  • You can preorder the game for $60 through the Microsoft Store.

A few weeks ago, Reef Entertainment revealed that it was working on a Terminator game called Terminator: Resistance. Many expected it to be a generic multiplayer experience, but it's actually a story-driven, single-player, first-person shooter. According to the developer, Terminator: Resistance lets you experience the events leading up to the decisive final battle for the fate of mankind in the war against the machines.

There are a few different gameplay options. You can always go in guns blazing, or adopt a sneaky approach where you hack Skynet's defenses. You can level up your skills and explore a post-apocalyptic world for scrap. It's unclear if this features a semi-open-world structure, but it'll be interesting to see when the game launches on December 10.

The other misconception was that Terminator: Resistance was just a small game, but it turns out it's quite an expansive experience. The price is also $60, priced right alongside other AAA shooters. If you love the Terminator franchise and can't wait to get your hands on the title, you can preorder it right now through the Microsoft Store.

Elgato HD60S+ Capture Card review: An Xbox One X streamer's dream

Elgato HD60S+

The Elgato HD60S+ is the first external card from the company that allows 4K HDR pass-through, and it's a dream for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro streamers. Here's what you need to know.

The Elgato HD USB capture cards have long been one of the most convenient ways to stream and capture gameplay footage for console gamers. A simple in-line connection between your console and TV, the Elgato capture cards extract the data straight out of your HDMI via USB to a connected PC. Up until now, though, they've had a bit of a downside for 4K console gamers.

The previous Elgato cards downgraded the HDMI signal to 1080p, which meant that you couldn't play games at 4K resolution while connected up to the card. The HD60S+ does away with this restriction, though, allowing for full 4K HDR pass-through. And it works like a dream. Here's our review.

Elgato HD60S+

$200

Elgato HD60S+

Bottom line: The HD60S+ is Elgato's best USB capture card to date, with flawless performance and 4K pass-through convenience.

Pros:

  • Flawless 4K HDR pass-through
  • Small, lightweight design
  • Great software

Cons:

  • Blocks HDCP signals (as a legal requirement)
  • 4K Capture software doesn't support HDR

The Elgato HD60S+ is easily the best USB-based capture card the company has offered, which side-stepped some of the early bugs that came with the HD60S and other capture cards of yesteryear. I've streamed with this device for several hours on our Mixer page without any issue, complete with a 4K HDR signal loud and proud on my QLED TV.

Operationally, the Elgato HD60S+ is identical to previous USB capture cards the company has released, sitting in-line between two HDMI cables that connect to your TV and your gaming device, with an additional USB-C to USB-A cable that sends data to your PC.

Elgato 4K CaptureElgato 4K Capture

The data is then picked up via Elgato's 4K capture utility, which makes it easy to extract footage and screenshots from a near-lagless live feed. It's easy to navigate your recordings via the app to then export them into relevant video editing software and so on. My only complaint was that it wasn't possible to extract screenshots from captured footage, but Elgato is already planning to add that feature in a future update.

The Elgato HD60S+ itself has a minimal footprint, at around 120 grams, with 112 x 75 x 19 mm dimensions, making it hardly bigger than a smartphone. It generates a bit of heat in use, but nothing that should be cause for concern. It also has a light strip across its body to let you know when it's active.

Elgato HD60S Plus

It has HDMI ports at either, as well as a USB-C port for its PC connection, and a 3.5mm-in for mixing in audio for live commentary recording and so on, although you can use your PC's audio devices for that as well.

When connected through to a 4K TV from a compatible device like an Xbox One X or a PS4 Pro, the HD60S+ simply passes through the full UHD HDR signal as though there wasn't a device in the interim at all. On-screen, it doesn't impact responsiveness or picture quality in any way, which was a bit of a concern. The capture card itself extracts footage at 1080p up to 60 frames per second, although there are a few downsides worth being aware of.

What you'll dislike about the Elgato HD60S+

Elgato HD60S Plus

The main annoyance with the HD60S+ isn't exactly Elgato's fault, but it blocks HDCP copy protection signals, which some media apps require to prevent piracy. It's a legal requirement for copyright law, but if you watch a lot of Xbox Movies & TV, you might need to pick up an additional HDMI switch to alternate the signal between the capture card and HDCP-compliant cables in order to watch your content.

Additionally, sometimes captured footage can look a little washed out. The 4K Capture Utility does offer the ability to adjust contrast and fiddle with HDR settings. Still, it seems like some games that have HDR enabled come through the other end looking a little flat, in specific configuration scenarios. Although it's a limitation on the HDR encoding/decoding process, and not exactly Elgato's fault.

Source: Windows Central | Elgato HD60S+ capture sample.

Again, this isn't the capture card's fault, but it's worth being aware of as a limitation of capturing footage in HDR, then reproducing it on a non-HDR display. When converting down from HDR to SDR, it does seem like some color information gets lost in the process. The Elgato 4K Capture Utility also does not output in HDR even if you connect it to a compatible display, which makes it hard to analyze color information correctly without converting it first, which is a bit of a shame. Hopefully, they can fix this in a future update.

Should you buy the Elgato HD60S+?

Elgato HD60S Plus

If you're a content creator using an Xbox One X or a PS4 Pro, the Elgato HD60S+ is an absolute must-buy product that makes capturing footage so much easier than using the console's recording features. This is especially true in the case of the Xbox One X, which has maddeningly slow and clunky sharing features.

5out of 5

It's a little pricey at $200, but it's more than worth the asking price if you're someone who will get a lot of use out of it. The capture software is speedy and well-built, the device itself is sleek and convenient, and the 4K pass-through works flawlessly. Just an all-round excellent product.

Can Xbox Game Studios replace Bethesda and Bioware as the RPG kings?

$

The Outer Worlds

Who'd have thought that one day, Microsoft might be a leading RPG mega-publisher?

Once upon a time, I would've called both Bethesda Game Studios and Bioware my two top developers. Both studios are responsible for some of the best games ever made, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Mass Effect 2.

Full of player choice, breadth, and potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay, Western RPGs feel like a struggling breed, where mega=publishers like Bethesda and Bioware's respective parent companies, Zenimax and EA, realize they can make far more money with far less investment chasing mobile phone games and microtransaction-laden service games like Fallout 76 and Anthem. Both suffered their fair share of criticism for blandness, bugs, and, at worst, boredom-inducing gameplay. Despite that, both games enjoy an active fanbase of players who are presumably paying up in perpetuity, justifying EA and Zenimax's continued investment in these low-rent pseudo-RPG efforts.

Fallout 76 Fallout 76 is a far cry from Fallout 3.

There are signs that this online focus isn't permanent, though. Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls VI, which we can only hope isn't some weak multiplayer service game. Likewise, EA is still trucking along with a new Dragon Age title, despite several high-profile departures from Bioware's development team in recent years.

Indie developers have also put out some absolute bangers in recent years, including Larian's Divinity Original Sin II, and the recent Steam hit Disco Elysium is also making waves. And of course, we have Cyberpunk 2077 on the horizon, from RPG darlings CD Projekt RED.

Either way, it seems surprising then that it has become Microsoft, out of all of the larger publishers, who is stepping up to the RPG plate.

Obsidian, inXile, Playground Games, oh my

Wasteland 3Scenes from Wasteland 3, hitting Xbox Game Pass in 2020.

Throughout 2018 and 2019, Microsoft went on a studio shopping spree to bulk up its internal portfolio, which has arguably been Xbox's biggest pain point throughout this entire generation. Playground Games joined the team, famed for the Forza Horizon franchise. Obsidian leaped across, known for RPGs like Pillars of Eternity and Fallout New Vegas. And classic RPG veterans inXile also joined, bringing with it cult RPGs Wasteland and Bard's Tale.

In the case of Playground Games, the team has been spinning up a second studio arm specifically to build an RPG, widely expected and rumored to be within the dormant Fable franchise. Playground has been hiring top-tier talent for the effort as well, picking up veterans from Rockstar Games and others in the process.

The Outer Worlds

Recently, Obsidian released The Outer Worlds, which is a very strong callback to the likes of Mass Effect and Fallout New Vegas, with razor-sharp character writing, and where your choices truly matter. The game has proven to be a big hit, and future entries in the franchise will fly under the Xbox Game Studios banner. There's every reason to believe that Obsidian will continue the Pillars of Eternity franchise, too, which has proven to be very popular.

InXile Entertainment's Wasteland 2 and Bard's Tale IV made up for technical limitations with depth and quality writing. Recently, we got our hands on the pre-alpha demo for Wasteland 3, which gave us an hour-long glimpse at the game. Wasteland 3 already represents a massive step up for the studio in every possible aspect, from visuals and art to technical polish, and makes me incredibly excited for the future capabilities of this team.

Why is it that Microsoft seems more willing to fund these types of efforts than some of the third-party publishers?

Game Pass effect

Xbox Game Pass at E3 2019

Besides the raw need to have some exclusive games for Xbox and Windows PCs, Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud both add an incentive to cater to fans of all types of games. For third-party publishers catering to shareholders who only care about the money derived from games, rather than the art, it seems harder to justify single-player experiences. EA dropped Mass Effect Andromeda like a brick, diverting efforts to its multiplayer Horde-style systems that offer microtransactions, opting to complete the story via a book instead of a more costly single-player DLC.

For Xbox (and at least for now), Microsoft wants a broad spread of content across all genres, catering to all sorts of gamers. Games that might not have done particularly well critically have found their audiences through Xbox Game Pass, which is also leading many players to explore titles they might have otherwise not bothered with.

Xbox Game Studios' lead Matt Booty commented (via Gamespot) that they aren't going to dictate what types of games its studios should make, and they should instead look at the data and decide for themselves.

One of the more satisfying things about Game Pass that we've seen is that games like Forza Horizon 4, that are in Game Pass and could be a traditional game with a pretty traditional structure, is doing fantastic in game pass in terms of people playing it and enjoying it. All the way through to Minecraft, which is also doing well. Same with Sea of Thieves. We've got State of Decay in there. So those games are all getting a lot of usage inside Game Pass which is great.

For that reason we don't really prescribe what kind of game somebody should make. What we try to do is try to give them information, here's what we see in Game Pass, here's what we see doing well, here's kind of the way we think about it. And then we let the studios go after that.

Project xCloud will also have a significant impact on how studios can target players. Games like Wasteland 3 and Pillars of Eternity, for example, will be ideal candidates for streaming games, even over slow internet connections, due to their turn-based nature. Having access to these broader audiences via subscriptions and streaming will help ensure the survival of RPG genres that publishers like Bethesda and EA seem to be de-prioritizing. The more replayability through choices and length, the better, too, because it'll keep people subscribed for longer.

A win-win

Xbox Game Pass

Through Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft has potentially found a win-win scenario for fans of all sorts of niche genres that some of the other bigger mega-publishers are increasingly turning their backs on. As Xbox Game Pass evolves, of course, this may not always be the case, but at least for now, it certainly seems like RPG fans on Xbox Game Pass will be well-catered for thanks to the likes of inXile and Obsidian. Playground Games' rumored Fable project is quite intriguing, too.

I do so hope we haven't seen the last of the single-player Fallout and Mass Effect RPGs, though.

Rainbow Six Siege next Operators leak alongside Year 5 plans

Rainbow Six Siege Jager

As Rainbow Six Siege Year 4 Season 4 approaches, a reputable leak provides a glimpse of potential future plans.

What you need to know

  • A reputable leak details alleged Year 4 Season 4 Operators and tease of Year 5 concepts, headed to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.
  • Season 4 reportedly debuts new anti-gadget and anti-projectile tools, alongside the first bolt-action rifle.
  • The Year 4 Season 4 update is scheduled for a reveal on November 10, 2019.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege soon locks down its Year 4 Season 4 update, delivering the latest of seasonal expansions for Ubisoft's hit tactical shooter. The final update of the year promises two new Operators on the roster, alongside a rework of the existing Theme Park map. And with Ubisoft expected to reveal Season 4 on November 10, our first alleged leak has surfaced.

The extensive Year 4 Season 4 tell-all comes via reputable leakster Kormora, previously famed for details on every Operator from 2019. Sources reportedly familiar with Ubisoft plans provide an overview of the future update contents, alongside the first glimpse at Year 5 concepts.

Rainbow Six Siege Jager ADS

As Ubisoft announced via its Year 4 roadmap in February, Season 4 looks to enlist new Indian and Kenyan talent. The latest leak alludes to an offensive Indian sniper role packing a bolt-action rifle, also capable of destroying gadgets. Her "grenade launcher" would fire projectiles that charge up and destroy defender gadgets, rivaling Thatcher's handheld EMPs.

The leak describes an accompanying defender, expanding on prior talk of Jäger competition. The Operator's deployable device reportedly "sucks in" nearby grenades, before triggering a detonation. Although details on the Operator loadout remain scarce, the Kenyan would feature one-speed mobility.

Season 4 may experiment with wider-reaching Operator changes, shaking up existing loadouts. A secondary alarm gadget is supposedly in the works (likely the previously-teased proximity alarm) alongside a "small thermite charge for attackers." The device appears to grant secondary hard-breaching utility to existing loadouts, providing an alternative beyond the classic Thermite, Hibana, and Maverick trio. Tachanka's long-awaited rework may lie on the horizon, while Finka transitions into a refined medic role too.

Rainbow Six Siege Mira Black Mirror

The source finally throws around upcoming Year 5 concepts, promising "interesting" Operator gadgets throughout 2020. Referring to the infamous "commercials with the Kool-Aid man," a forthcoming Operator may pack capability to burst open destructible walls. Talk of a "medic drone operator" and "akimbo dude" are also pitched, as Ubisoft attempts to lock in plans for the coming year. However, ongoing engine struggles appear to bottleneck Operator ideas.

Lots of stuff got shelved over the years over engine issues and impracticability, for example we had a shield with a stun in mind that would throw back people but with the way shields are we felt it was wise to not pursue it atm. Flamethrowers, light beams, and other wilder ideas are held back by the engine for now...

As with any third-party leak, take all contents lightly until an official reveal from Ubisoft. However, a proven track record goes a long way, providing unmatched authenticity ahead of teasers.

Year 4 Season 4 is expected for a November 10 unveiling, alongside the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals in Tokoname, Japan, indicative of an early December 2019 release date.

Our complete guide to foxes in Minecraft

A bunch of foxy bois

Questions abound after foxes officially release across the entirety of Minecraft. We've got the answers.

Foxes are amongst the latest mobs to leap their way into Minecraft and have already captured the attention of many players with their furry tails and adorable day-time naps. Having been present on the Java Edition of Minecraft for a while, foxes have officially made the jump to the Bedrock Edition with the latest beta, meaning it's time to go over what foxes do, and how you can become best friends with them.

What are foxes in Minecraft?

Two red foxes in a hole

Joining the prestigious ranks of tamable mobs with wolves, ocelots, and cats, foxes seek to take the crown for most adorable Minecraft animal. And they may very well succeed. Foxes are a passive mob with some unique behaviors that make them an exciting addition to the game's bewilderingly expansive collection of wildlife.

Depending on your luck, foxes may be a tad challenging to track down in-game. They can only be found in taiga biomes (cold forests populated by spruce trees), and they won't be as common as mobs like pigs or cows. However, foxes do typically spawn in groups of 3-4, which offsets their rarity.

There are two different kinds of foxes that can be found in the game. In taiga biomes devoid of snow and ice, the foxes that spawn there will be red and white. However, foxes that spawn in taiga biomes that do have an abundance of snow will generate with white and grey fur, much like arctic foxes. This, of course, makes them the best thing in Minecraft.

If you have a desire to maximize your chances of finding a fox in-game, they also enjoy hanging out around villages. Minecraft foxes are just as mischievous as their real-life counterparts, leading to some amusing fuzzy capers when nighttime comes around.

Overall, foxes are quite small (bigger than a cat but smaller than a wolf) and have large amounts of energy when they're active. Large heads and big, fluffy tails complete their look. There are also baby foxes, although those are rarer in the wild.

How do foxes behave in Minecraft?

A lone fox by some pumpkins

It seems now that every subsequent mob Mojang adds to Minecraft has to be more lively and personal than any other added before it. With all the many behaviors foxes exhibit, and the bees that will be added later on, Mojang is making cows, pigs and chickens dreadfully dull. That said, there's a lot to cover, so let's jump into it.

  • Foxes are nocturnal. The most noticeable fox-behavior will be their sleeping schedule. Foxes actively avoid being awake during the day, seeking out shady spots to curl up until night falls. If you disturb a sleeping fox, or if the lighting above it changes, the fox will search for another place to snatch some Z's.
  • Foxes prefer to be in groups. Finding a solo fox isn't impossible, but they tend to hang around other foxes, even sleeping next to each other at times.
  • Foxes are carnivores. Foxes love munching on chickens, rabbits, most of the fish in the game, and even baby turtles if they're on land. Red foxes will primarily go after land critters, while arctic foxes prefer a quick swim with their meal.
  • Foxes target villages. Whenever night arrives, foxes become far more active. Foxes will target villages specifically to steal items from villagers and eat their chickens.
  • Foxes will carry items around. Interestingly, foxes will pick up and carry various items around in their mouths. They can pick up anything that the player can. If a fox is killed while it is holding an item, it will drop the item immediately for the player to pick up. Then again, why would you ever kill one?
  • Foxes can use their carried items. Even more interesting, foxes can use whatever items they pick up! Foxes prefer to carry food (and will eventually eat it), but foxes can also pick up weapons and use those weapons when attacking.
  • Foxes are incredibly good jumpers. Foxes in Minecraft don't jump, they leap. And they leap far. A fox that's about to jump will crouch down and ready themselves, then launch themselves through the air. They can easily clear fences and walls, and can jump 4 or 5 blocks high at points! It's time to rebuild your chicken coops.

Fun fact: if an arctic fox jumps and lands in a pile of high snow, they'll become stuck momentarily. There's a little animation and everything.

  • Foxes can move very fast. The speed of a running fox is pretty similar to that of an ocelot, so these little guys are quite challenging to keep up with.

  • Foxes love sweet berry bushes. Sweet berry bushes are among the more annoying fauna you can accidentally bump into in Minecraft, but that doesn't apply to foxes. Not only do they love eating them, but foxes also take no damage and take no hit in speed when moving through sweet berry pushes. Talk about a sweet perk.
  • Wolves and polar bears hate foxes. Whenever a wolf or polar bear is close to a fox, they'll immediately attack. Polar bears are a little more sneaky, but wolves will just go for it.
  • Foxes distrust players. Foxes will generally avoid any players. There's a way around this, however, since foxes will let you approach if you sneak while moving towards them.

How to tame and breed foxes in Minecraft

A lotta red foxes in a hole

Now that you know more about foxes, it's more important than ever to learn how to become friends with them. As mentioned before, foxes are tamable as well as breedable, so you're able to have your own pack of them. That way, they can sleep all day and ignore you. Of course, foxes just had to go and be different from other mobs, so you can't just tame a couple then start breeding them. It actually happens in the reverse order.

  1. Procure some sweet berries and a lead. The sweet berries can be harvested off of bushes found in the same biomes foxes are located in. The lead you can either create yourself or nab from a villager/trader.
  2. Find a group of foxes. One fox won't do, which is why it's fortunate that they usually spawn in groups. You can also try searching at night for a higher chance of finding them if you're willing to brave the scary mobs.
  3. Approach the group quietly. You must sneak when approaching any wild fox, as it'll immediately flee if you don't.
  4. Feed two of the foxes sweet berries. Take your pick and feed each fox one sweet berry. Much like other mobs, it'll start spewing a load of hearts to indicate it's ready to make some babies.
  5. Once the foxes have made a baby, immediately attach a lead to it. The adult foxes are not tamable in the wild, but any babies that you help create will be born trusting you. However, baby foxes are still prone to following any nearby adult foxes, so attaching a lead is how you prevent that from happening.
  6. Once the baby reaches adulthood, it'll fully trust you. Do this one more time, and you have your own duo of trusted adult foxes to create your family. You can do this with both red and arctic foxes.

The end of a furry tale

Two sleepy bois

That's all you need to know about the new foxes in Minecraft! If you play on the Java Edition, you've probably had these guys for a few months now, but for everyone playing on the Bedrock Edition, there's yet another new thing to go out and find. I, for one, fully intend to fill my entire house with nothing but foxes.

What do you think about the new foxes? Are you going to create a foxy army? Let us know below!

Disco Elysium

Now we have confirmation.

What you need to know

  • Disco Elysium an open-world role-playing game that's garnering amazing reviews.
  • It's only available on PC at the moment.
  • Lead Designer Robert Kurvitz confirmed that it's coming to Xbox One.
  • You can purchase it for $40 on Steam.

Recently, a game called is making waves across the gaming industry. Not only is it getting phenomenal reviews, but it's also being praised by gamers. For those unfamiliar with the title, Disco Elysium an open-world role-playing game. You're a detective with a unique skill system at your disposal and a whole city block to carve your path across. Interrogate unforgettable characters, crack murders, or take bribes. The choice is yours.

Disco Elysium is only available on PC at the moment, but that's about to change in 2020. According to the developer, the game is coming to Xbox One next year. Escapist managed to sit down with Lead Designer Robert Kurvitz to discuss the game. During the interview, he said the following.

The immediate plan, and this is why I won't go on a holiday anytime soon, is to get Disco Elysium to as many people as possible. We're going to port it next year to PlayStation and Xbox. We need to be very hands-on with the design of that. We don't want to hire a porting company. We think it really is going to lend itself very well to console play because you don't need to go over minute tactics and use a mouse because it's very narrative in its nature.

It's great to see that this modern cult classic is coming to Xbox One — or possibly only Project Scarlett — soon. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know. This is definitely exciting news!

The Outer Worlds doesn't need a colorblind mode because it's built in

The Outer Worlds official artwork.

Making a game more accessible should never be an afterthought. Good on Obsidian for thinking about others.

What you need to know

  • The Outer Worlds is a massive RPG available on Xbox and PC.
  • It has color-blind features baked into the game without the need for a toggle.
  • Outer Worlds is available on Game Pass Ultimate.

When the Outer Worlds was released it was received with much critical acclaim. As our very own Jez Cordon says "There is no question in my mind that The Outer Worlds represents an instant classic." What you may not know though is the game was also designed with certain accessibility options in mind from the start.

Josh Sawyer, the Studio Design Director at Obsidian, explained in a recent tweet that the team built the Outer Worlds to be "playable without color information." If you suffer from the different types of color blindness then certain colors, when put next to each other, merge.

By making sure the Outer Worlds works without the need for color information Obsidian has opened the game up for many players to experience the game without fear of missing key parts, or having their enjoyment dampened.

Instant classic

The Outer Worlds

Most-exciting new IP in years

The Outer Worlds is a little rough around the edges similar to its ragtag crew of heroes, but it's not for lack of heart and soul. The Outer Worlds is a tremendous journey across an entire star system RPG fans can't miss.
