Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 review: A gamepad perfected

Xbox Elite Series 2

Microsoft's original Xbox Elite Controller had lofty ambitions but collapsed under the weight of some crippling flaws. The Elite Series 2 fixes all that, while piling on extra features. Here's our review.

The OG Xbox Elite Controller launched a few years ago and won itself a heap of initial praise. Extra paddles on the reverse for additional buttons, trigger locks for more rapid firing activation, and rubberized grips for a more tactile feel. However, in the months and years that followed, many users reported that their Elite controllers were, well, falling apart, which isn't the ideal scenario if you're shelling out over $100 for a gamepad.

That's why we're encouraged by the work Microsoft has done to improve the overall robustness of the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2, which not only revises the construction but adds in piles of extra features along the way.

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 Mammoth battery life

Xbox Elite Series 2

Right out of the box, the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 screams quality. The Elite Series 2 is built from the ground up for those who want to get a little bit more out of their gaming, and it's evident that the team at Redmond has poured over every aspect of this device to ensure that it goes above and beyond what they had attempted with the previous Elite. Outwardly, it looks as though not a lot has changed, but it's all in the details.

Even the carrying case has undergone some revision to bring it up to speed with the Series 2's feature set. It comes with a magnetic floor designed to keep the charging dock in place if you prefer to charge your controller right out of the case. To accommodate, it also has a nifty rubber port on the back so you can feed the cable through. The magnet is also strong enough to keep the dock in place while lifting the controller free, which really exemplifies the S2's excellent attention to detail.

So, what about that charging dock? It's perhaps my favorite feature of the whole package, which I've been using as my daily driver for a few weeks now. Previously I would have argued blind that having AA batteries was a better solution since you could maintain charging cycles if you're using something like the Panasonic Eneloop AA charging cradle.

Xbox Elite Controller S2Xbox Elite Controller Series 2Xbox Elite Series 2

However, that was before I knew it was possible to cram an absurd 40 hours worth of battery life into a controller. In testing, we found that the Elite S2 actually often exceeded Microsoft's own listing of 40 hours without a 3.5mm headset attached, which is an impressive feat.

Whether you're docking in the case or with the charging dock removed and placed on a surface, it's easy to drop the controller into the charging position, thanks to the dock's powerful magnets. The controller also gives you a reassuring vibration once docked, and a soft white light pulses to let you know it's charging up — remaining solid when full. If you leave the controller in the USB-C charging dock when you go to bed, you're never going to run out of juice with this thing.

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 Construction quality and ergonomics

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2

Beyond charging, most of the controller's improvements are refinements to existing features we had on the previous S2, with what feels like a much tighter, denser construction. Rather than a simple shape mold, the new rubber grips are fixed with high-quality adhesive, that I was unable to lever off using a guitar pick or even a blunt razor.

The stuff the original Elite got right has been refined, and the stuff it got wrong has been fixed.

Without a time machine, there's no way to know if they won't warp over time, but the difference in quality between the original Elite and the S2 is readily apparent. I'm incredibly confident in what Microsoft has put together here.

The fact the grips wrap around the whole handles instead of just on the back gives it a more pleasant feel in hand. The materials in general just feel great to the touch, even if the soft matte black plastic attracts fingerprints and smudges like mad. In fact, the controller is generally difficult to keep clean, with various tiny notches and grooves that are prone to dust accumulation. If you're a neat freak, it may drive you crazy.

Another area of concern for many has been the shoulder buttons, which suffered from similar wear and tear problems on the previous Elite. They feel far stronger than the previous effort. Squeezing them in with an usual degree of force didn't cause any damage, nor did dropping the controller on the floor shoulder-button first (although I don't recommend attempting either at home).

Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

The thumbsticks and d-pad have the same strong magnets to hold everything in place, and it's quick and easy to swap them out. The paddles feel like they have more travel this time around, with deeper hooks to prevent accidental dislodging. The triggers also have some texturing, which provides a slightly more tactile feel. Ultimately, the stuff the original Elite got right has been refined, and the things it got wrong has been fixed.

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 New features

Xbox Elite Series 2

Beyond the charging dock, a lot of the Series 2's new features are hidden away on the inside or in subtle additions throughout. There are now three stages of trigger locking up from two, for example. There's also a tension control key, which lets you increase the amount of force you have to deliver to move a thumbstick, which can be a massive boost for precision with the right tweaks. Using a longer joystick, for example, gives you a greater distance away from the joystick pivot for making small precise aiming adjustments without having to sacrifice speed.

Being able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now.

The upgraded microprocessor in the Elite S2 allows for a greater degree of keybindings than the previous Elite as well. Now, you can also add system-level features to the reverse paddles, including things like Xbox capture and screenshots, and even TV controls if you've set up the IR Blaster on your Xbox One. Being able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now.

Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

The new Elite S2 also allows for three configuration profiles up from the previous two, toggleable with a button switch in the center of the controller and a light indicator for each profile. I've set up a separate profile for Call of Duty, which gives me access to reloading and weapon switching on the paddles without having to take my thumb off the joystick, and another profile for TV controls and screenshotting. It's all just so convenient, and really elevates your Xbox experience as a whole. Once you've gone through the motions of setting it up, that is.

Should you buy the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2?

Xbox Elite Series 2

The new Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is such a vast improvement over the first in every possible respect. The charging dock is by far and away the best solution we've seen in gaming for keeping an Xbox controller topped off, with a solid weight and rapid, 1-2 hour charge cycle to get fully topped off. For me, that alone makes it worth a look.

4.5out of 5

The additional features are also exciting and numerous, granting players who want a little more from their console experience the options they need to control their experience fully.

It's the best of the best, and unfortunately, that doesn't come cheap.

The only downside is that tweaking it can take a long time, and it truly is a rabbit hole when you start drilling down into the app's accentuation curve controls and that sort of thing.

The main pitfall of this product is the $180 price tag. It's far cheaper to get a basic $40 Xbox controller and an Eneloop battery charger to keep your gameplay topped off, and you can get some of the Elite controller's features using third-party accessories on a budget. What you get with the Elite Series 2 is premium quality, premium features, and premium convenience. It's the best of the best, and unfortunately, that doesn't come cheap. If you can stomach that price point, though, you won't regret it.

The pinnacle of Xbox accessory engineering.

With premium features, premium construction, and premium details, the Series 2 also comes with a very premium price tag. If you can weather the bill, you won't find yourself disappointed, though. This might be the best controller ever made.

We tried out RTX tech in Minecraft and it got us hooked on ray tracing

Minecraft NVIDIA RTX

Minecraft meets NVIDIA's RTX tech for game-changing results and a gateway into the world of ray tracing.

Minecraft calls back to an era of 8-bit arcades, applied to the freedoms of a three-dimension sandbox, and a prime example of throwback graphics. The title evolved from its sole creator to the backing of a trillion-dollar company but retains that fundamentally timeless style after one decade. It's what makes the advances of the NVIDIA RTX update so compelling, shaking up that signature stylization through cutting-edge technology.

Minecraft's impending RTX support drops in the wake of the Super Duper Graphics Pack cancellation, initially scheduled for late 2017. The approach demanded an extensive rework of underlying engine foundations, promising volumetric lighting, dynamic shadows, reflections, among other enhancements. The planned result pushed improved visuals while retaining Minecraft's defining simplicity.

Mojang eventually axed the project, citing performance concerns, but now revives similar philosophies with its upcoming NVIDIA collaboration. Leveraging its in-house RTX platform for presentation enhancements, the update fulfills those once-promised lighting and shadow improvements. The highlight of the collaboration comes via new real-time ray tracing, soon headed to the Windows 10 PC client.

Some adblockers have been known to break the image sliders in this story, so consider disabling them for this piece.

Try Minecraft RTX and you won't go back

Minecraft RTX Screenshot Off

Minecraft adopts RTX amid a surge of ray tracing-backed experiences, all in parallel new dedicated PC and console hardware. The advanced rendering technique advances lighting, better simulating how interactions with virtual objects. Ray tracing and accompanying technologies look to drive a leap in light, shadows, and reflections, further developing the presentation of sophisticated locales.

The Microsoft voxel blockbuster isn't an expected pairing with realism, but the final implementation emerges nothing short of astounding. Layering those basic foundations with ground-breaking techniques creates a contrast that drastically shifts the overall tone.

Our impressions follow one hour with Minecraft's RTX-layered upgrades, hosted on a curated map from Mojang that highlights crucial features. Fresh lighting and shadow techniques are the immediate takeaways, best demonstrated by the variance of black shadows through concentrated bloom. That also invokes a sense of added depth to blocks, especially when doubled up with new 3D modeling for textures.

Minecraft RTX Screenshot On
Minecraft RTX Screenshot Off

RTX also overhauls the perception of blocks, furthering advancing lighting systems. Real-time global illumination is a crucial component that simulating how light bounces between surfaces. It allows light sources to fully occupy an environment, best showcased with lava and lanterns in cave networks. Colored carpets and shimmering minerals exhibit similar results, conveying their tones upon surrounding blocks.

Mojang's new approach to water completes the RTX foundations, introducing reflections, refraction, and transparency — a far departure from the original indigo-tinted depths.

That complexity makes a considerable impact, admittedly making it hard to return to the vanilla setup. I've since been spending more time in Minecraft, switching to Java to experiment with third-party mods, while also exploring ray tracing in other RTX titles. The latest triple-A titles might flex their graphical prowess, but the leap Mojang has delivered was my gateway to getting hooked.

With all these changes, some may say it infringes on the core identity of Minecraft. It's debatable, but all I know is that it looks damn good in the process. We've wrapped up a selection of screenshots in Minecraft, showcasing RTX when off and enabled.

While RTX delivers an impressive advancement over the base Minecraft feature set, it's still unclear how performance fairs across a vast range of hardware. Even when backed by NVIDIA's latest RTX-tailored GPUs, these enhancements will make your PC work hard, stripping the performance gains of most high-end systems. Our hands-on session used a GTX 2080 Ti-powered rig to showcase the full potential of RTX, understandably so. Still, performance must be consistent across the family to be viable on the regular.

Minecraft RTX heads exclusively to its Windows 10 client, supported across NVIDIA's full RTX-compatible range, headlined by its RTX 20 series. While legacy Java users will skip out on the benefits, a line of existing unofficial solutions should suffice. However, with this Bedrock foundation, here's hoping ray tracing hits Minecraft on the next-generation Xbox Project Scarlett, even if it doubles down on AMD technologies.

Microsoft is yet to commit to a launch date for Minecraft's RTX enhancements, but keep an eye out for the coming year.

Afterparty is a fun, colorful story with some technical issues

Milo and Lola are in a bit of trouble in Afterparty

Night School Studio is back with a hard-drinking, easy-going experience.

Afterparty is Night School Studio's second game, after the team's debut title Oxenfree in 2016. Instead of a coming-of-age story with mysterious happenings, however, Afterparty gets right to the point. Two best friends, Milo and Lola, are in Hell. Why? Who knows, your average hardworking demon isn't authorized to give out that kind of information. They've got jobs to do, after all. Still, the night is young, and before the torment begins the next day, Milo and Lola learn of an interesting catch: Satan loves to party and drink. If they can outdrink Satan, they can get out of Hell.

This results in a fun, wacky journey through the nightlife and club scenes of Hell. Vivid colors, witty dialogue, and a great soundtrack are some of the highlights as you gargle some pretty potent potables. Your choice of drink even affects what dialogue options are available, in turn affecting how you progress through the story and what ending you'll get. While it's a great adventure, technical problems mar the experience right now, as the frame rate suffers whenever traveling between areas and dialogue would get glitched, repeating at times. It's still a good experience, just one that suffers more than it should.

Bottom line: A charming, alcoholic romp through Hell that suffers from technical issues.

Pros

  • Fantastic art design

  • Excellent voice acting

Cons

  • Major frame rate problems when traveling
  • Dialogue sometimes overlapped or repeated

Afterparty is all about drinking and talking

A rooftop bar in Afterparty

The first thing that stands out in this non-traditional trip to Hell is the excellent dialogue. Much like Oxenfree, conversations flow at a natural rate, almost as liberally as the alcohol. You can choose from two dialogue options or a special third option that depends on just what kind of corrosive cocktail you've imbibed. Some drinks let you impersonate a pirate captain; others offer straightforward liquid courage. This opens an interesting gameplay system as choosing your drink is almost as important as choosing your words. Do you fancy sparring wits with entities older that time? Well, you'll have to if you hope to get out. Occasionally though, I noticed an annoying bug where side conversations would repeat themselves, playing at the same time as other dialogue. It only happened a couple of times, but it was extremely annoying when it did, making it nearly impossible to understand anything.

Afterparty touts an impressive cast, with Dave Fennoy voicing Satan.

You'll control both Milo and Lola, with the exact character swapping from time to time based on your choices. Sometimes, you'll even have to go through some drinking games, like beer pong, stacking glasses, and even a dance-off. The controls can be a little finicky, though it's nothing too tricky once you get a bit of practice. There's also a ghoulish social media platform you can check in on called Bicker, which is essentially Twitter except without the pretense of people ever being nice. On Bicker, you can find some funny jokes and pictures based on your escapades through the night. Our wholesome teen duo have their phones, so you'll occasionally even see other humans and demons Tweeting-er, Bickering, in real-time.

Afterparty touts an impressive cast, with seasoned voice actors like Janina Gavankar as Lola and Khoi Dao as Milo. They're joined Ashly Burch and Erin Yvette as the demons Sam and Wormhorn respectively, while Dave Fennoy lends his dulcet tones and portrays none other than Satan. Alanah Pearce also lends her voice to a particularly fitting role. Everyone turns in a fantastic performance, which aids the immersion. Is the idea of Hell as a bureaucratic place where demons just care for the nightlife kind of absurd? Yes, but the performances completely sell me on it.

Afterparty has a loud, colorful aesthetic

A dance club in Hell

Burning planes of torment? No, it's all parties and devilish music. Neon purple, pink, and light greens dominate the landscape, which might seem like an odd choice for Hell, but it works rather well for this unique aesthetic. Frequently, I found myself stopping and taking a look at the background detail or work put into the different clubs. Regions of Hell feel distinct, despite the strong, overarching party theme. There's also usually some funny background gags, like demons who have partied too hard crashing or complaining about having to return to work the next day.

The strong color choices paint a vivid, unique portrait of Hell.

These strong color choices paint a vivid, unique portrait of Hell and compliment the soundtrack well. The upbeat tempo is fitting for the bar hopping and partying the protagonists undertake. The soundtrack was done by Andrew Rohrmann, aka scntfc, who also did the soundtrack for Oxenfree. It's usually frenetic and energetic, perfect for the drinking games and dance competition chaos you'll undergo. Still, there are a few quieter moments, somber tunes that play in the brief breaks that Milo and Lola get to just talk with each other.

Unfortunately, the frame rate isn't where it needs to be. When you're walking the streets of Hell, sometimes you'll need to call for a taxi to traverse from one island or region to the next. Whenever you do, like clockwork, the frame rate will tank. Not a small, sporadic drop either - usually, it would slow to a crawl, stuttering and stopping for easily ten to fifteen seconds. It also tended to do this whenever the game autosaves. While that's by no means the majority of the game, it's not insignificant either - Afterparty is a few hours long, and you're traveling back and forth constantly.

Summing up the binge drinking in Afterparty

Wrapping things up, I really do like Afterparty. It's fun, colorful, and stylish, with smart, just-awkward-enough-for-Hell dialogue. The protagonists are interesting, the demonic characters they interact with given a unique spin. Plus, this version of Hell is, ultimately, pretty fun! At night, anyways. Unfortunately, the technical issues that are present right now bring things down a bit. The frame rate tanking every single time you travel is bad enough, but the problems with dialogue repeating also weigh it down.

3.5out of 5

If you absolutely love these types of games, or you're really, really eager for something new, then it's still worth checking out, especially since it's only $20 USD. If you're a little more hesitant, I'd wait, at least until some of these issues are possibly fixed in a patch. Afterparty is included in Xbox Game Pass, so if you intend to play on Xbox, you do have another option.

Wasteland 3 preview: InXile goes 'AAA' with this gritty apocalypse RPG

$

Wasteland 3

Recently, I was able to go hands-on with Wasteland 3's pre-alpha PC demo. Even in this brief slice, it seems like InXile is on to a winner fans of classic CRPGs will adore.

In 2018, Microsoft unveiled that it had purchased InXile Entertainment, led by the legendary Interplay co-founder Brian Fargo. InXile was founded in 2002 and has since been a trailblazer on crowdfunding platforms, building games like Torment: Tides of Numenera, The Bard's Tale IV, and Wasteland 2.

Wasteland itself predates the Fallout franchise and shares a common ancestry. While initially similar, Fallout eventually ended up in Bethesda's portfolio, turning into a first-person shooter with RPG elements. Wasteland 2, however, felt like a true successor to both the original Fallout and Wasteland games, retaining open-ended story choices (and consequences), and tactical combat that Fallout has gradually stripped away over the years.

Thankfully, Wasteland 3 plays to the strengths of those classic genres and has the potential to ascend above the crowd-funded roughness of Wasteland 2, injecting some triple-A star quality into the mix that has frankly been rare for games of this type.

This is Wasteland 3, the most addictive demo I've played in years.

Wasteland 3 World boost

Wasteland 3

The first very obvious upgrade Wasteland 3 has undergone between games is visuals and audio, which is orders of magnitude superior over its predecessor. Dynamic lighting, high-quality textures, and atmospheric weather effects give Wasteland 3 a much-needed polish pass if the franchise is to rise from cult status to find new audiences.

Wasteland 3 is set in Colorado, in the grip of a nuclear winter. Vehicles play a part in the gameplay this time around, allowing you to drive around the world to different locations, as opposed to simply being represented as a pointer on an overworld map, as was the case in Wasteland 2. It seems there may be multiple vehicle upgrades to obtain throughout the game, starting with a simple jeep, all the way up to this monstrous "Kodiak" wasteland tank, complete with a magnetic railgun (and yes, you can use it in combat).

Beyond Wasteland 3's environment, the game's general fidelity has seen a massive boost in polygon count across the board. You can zoom in very close and see minute details in player character's armor, environmental details, and, of course, gorgeous gore effects when blasting enemies into bloody chunks.

Wasteland 3 Combat refined

Wasteland 3

Speaking of bloody chunks, Wasteland 3 upgrades the combat flow over Wasteland 2 in a few ways, which may help it find new audiences without alienating those who want deep, tactical play.

In Wasteland 2, enemies would execute their turns one after the other, which could be particularly monotonous if you were fighting multiple mobs. Some of Wasteland 2's enemies were just painfully slow by the nature of their typing. Giant maggots, for example, would very, very slowly slide their way over to you, before dishing out some (grotesque) attacks.

In Wasteland 3, the entire enemy team takes their turn together simultaneously, which puts command back into your hands far more rapidly than the previous game. It also makes everything feel more action-packed, without losing the tactical slant the genre is known and appreciated for.

The demo gives you a party of four preset characters to play around with. The precision targeting system returns from previous Wasteland games, although it has been given a makeover, resembling something close to Fallout's V.A.T.S. system. A successful shot to the head or limbs can produce a range of tactically crucial debuffs, albeit in exchange for a higher chance of missing. If you're able to execute an enemy this way, it can be particularly spectacular, too.

Wasteland 3 Star quality

Wasteland 3

Another way Wasteland 3 excites is in its cinematic upgrades. The voice acting, in general, feels far better, which already features an array of suitably deranged heroes and villains and everything in between.

The demo mission has you attempting to rescue a ranger squad from a dangerous "Breather" drug cult, who have turned hallucinogens into a religious rite. The breathers are as violent as they are high and have been terrorizing the locals with some gruesome results.

Wasteland 3

The area this mission takes place in is large and sprawling, with multiple pathways that allow various character abilities to shine. One route takes you through a flame turret-laden death trap, while another lets you make use of your mechanist skills to bypass some enemies. Of course, you can always go in guns blazin' and wipe everyone out.

After defeating the boss group, you're introduced to Vic Buchanan, the son of the mysterious "Patriarch," who seems to be a ruler of some sort in this region. You were charged with bringing Vic to heel, and the game offers you multiple choices for dealing with him, based on your skills. If your first aid skill is high enough, you can appeal to health concerns and pacify him that way, opting either to kill, arrest, or even induct him into your party. The demo closes, noting that each choice has consequences that will impact the game and the way the characters and factions perceive you moving forward.

Wasteland 3 is looking excellent

Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3's pre-alpha demo has a few performance hiccups on PC, seeming to stutter while performing damage calculations and slipping in and out of combat. Still, there's plenty of time between now and the Spring 2020 launch window to fix up these concerns.

Wasteland 3 will hit Xbox One, PC, and PS4 when it arrives next year, complete with two-player co-op and a story that focuses on building a new foothold in the icy wastes of Colorado. You'll have to gear up your vehicles, micromanage and develop a new Ranger base, all while navigating the game's winding story and branching narrative. It'll also launch day one into Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC.

InXile has lofty goals for Wasteland 3, and if this early pre-Alpha demo is any indication, they could be on the path to totally nailing it.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides Teaser

Get your feet wet in the next Rainbow Six Siege update, Operation Shifting Tides.

What you need to know

  • Ubisoft has unveiled its final Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege update, titled Operation Shifting Tides.
  • The wavy debut teaser preludes a November 10 reveal at the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals, Japan.

Ubisoft has unveiled Operation Shifting Tides, its fourth and final major update headed to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege in 2019. The latest of tri-monthly expansions set sights on Kenya-India relations, receiving its first oceanic teaser ahead of a November 10 unveiling.

First outlined via its Year 4 roadmap back in February, Shifting Tides looks to pack two fresh Operators, hailing from Indian and Kenyan counterterrorism units. An accompanying Theme Park rework also lies on the table, continuing an initiative of revisiting existing maps with improved layouts and visual palettes. The first teaser has now debuted, via the official Rainbow Six Twitter account.

Reputable leaks already outline a promising duo on the horizon, fulfilling two highly-requested roles across the roster. An alleged Indian attacker will provide a new Thatcher alternative, equipped with anti-gadget launcher comparable to the handheld EMPs. The Operator will also reportedly debut the game's first bolt-action rifle, forging the second sniper role on offense.

Defenders will reportedly secure competition for Jager via an alternate anti-projectile deployable for the Kenyan Operator. Leaks detail a device that can capture and detonate projectiles, differentiating from the hard-counter offered by Jager.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides is set for a November 10 unveiling alongside the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals in Tokoname, Japan.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides release date

Ubisoft unveiled Operation Shifting Tides on November 6, dropping a brief oceanic teaser to the official Rainbow Six Siege Twitter account. The post features the tagline "The waves of change are on the horizon," with further details on the future update still to be unveiled.

As with past Rainbow Six Siege updates, Ubisoft is yet to commit to a formal release date until closer to deployment. However, long-established schedules allow for an accurate estimation of the Shifting Tides debut.

Operation Shifting Tides is expected for a November 10, 2019 unveiling, alongside the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals in Tokoname, Japan. The tournament's Asian debut will feature a dedicated reveal panel, followed by three weeks of public Technical Test Server (TTS) trials, wrapping with a December 3, 2019 release date.

Shifting Tides new Kenya and India Operators

Rainbow Six Siege Bandit

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides retains Ubisoft's well-established seasonal template, shining the spotlight on two recruits. New playable Operators assume attacker and defender roles, accompanied by high-tech gadgets to shake up the multiplayer meta. New Kenyan and Indian Operators are scheduled to further diversify the roster, outlined via the Year 4 roadmap.

Ubisoft is yet to detail either Operator beyond nationalities, though reputable leaks provide an alleged overview of internal plans. Headlining attack looks to be a new Indian sniper with anti-gadget capabilities, primarily serving as the first Thatcher alternative. The existing SAS Operator boasts unmatched electronics denial via handheld EMPs, with increasing value as new defenders hit the scene. Shifting Tides's attacker looks to deliver similar functionality via a compact launcher, charging up to eradicate nearby gadgets.

The Operator reportedly brings the first bolt-action rifle to Rainbow Six Siege, hopefully ending a period of recycled weaponry. That would be the first DLC sniper to follow Glaz, although avoiding past missteps with her gadgetry.

More: How Rainbow Six Siege Shifting Tides leaked Operators evolve the meta

The long-rumored "Jager competition" also supposedly drops with Shifting Tides, carving a new anti-projectile role in the lineup. As Jager's utility and firepower propel this most-picked defender, sources claiming familiarity with Ubisoft plans detail a gadget that captures and detonates throwables. That avoids the binary nature of the ADS while experimenting with new creative counters.

It's unclear whether Shifting Tides will recycle existing weaponry, emerging a contentious topic in 2019. Ubisoft has shifted its focus away from licensing and developing weaponry, now with two seasons failing to expand the arsenal. Further additions haven't been ruled out but keep hopes tempered.

The update may also see our long-awaited Proximity Alarm secondary gadget hit the scene, referenced both via in-game files and promotional assets. The deployable is expected to hook onto door frames, alerting of passing players with an audible sound. Leaks since back up these references alongside mention of a secondary hard-breaching gadget, described as "small thermite charge." We've also heard work is underway on fire countermeasures, although status remains unclear at this time.

Shifting Tides Theme Park map rework

Wrapping up Ubisoft's lineup of Year 4 maps, Theme Park is the latest on track for an extensive rework. Two years since its Operation Blood Orchid debut, Shifting Tides sets out for a revisit with various refinements to improve competitive play. The refresh primarily sets out to carve new sightlines to improve attacker-defender encounters, while balancing lighting.

Following the Year 4 reveal at the Six Invitational 2019, Rainbow Six Siege Presentation Director Alexander Karpazis provided us with a deeper glimpse into Theme Park plans. "Keeping things that worked like, on the first floor, Drug Lab was great. But then you get the maze that's happening to the side with Gargoyles," said Karpazis. "We want to streamline that a little bit more and balance the lighting. Theme Park is a map that's super, super dark in some places, super-bright in some places. Kind of averaging it out so that it's easier for players to recognize what's happening."

"And then on the second floor, we're actually looking at that connecting hallway where you have the train cars. It's very hard to flush out defenders, there are so many hiding spots. And we're also going to be taking a look at the twin staircase there too."

With Theme Park under the knife, Ubisoft has temporarily pulled the map with the Operation Ember Rise update. Set for reintroduction in Shifting Tides, Ranked, Unranked, and Casual playlist rotations exclude the map. A Halloween-themed haunted house also based on Theme Park dropped this October, via a limited-time mid-season event.

Rainbow Six Siege Battle Pass Phase 2

First unveiled alongside Operation Ember Rise, Rainbow Six Siege also soon secures its Battle Pass. Popularized Fortnite, Call of Duty, among other top shooters, Ubisoft is the latest to adopt this monetization hook, serving up exclusive rewards and lore. With Operation Ember Rise dropping foundations via a week-long trial, Operation Shifting Tides brings a "full-fledged" extension to the game.

Ember Rise dropped Phase 1 of the Rainbow Six Battle Pass dubbed "Call Me Harry," compiling a series of milestones over seven days. The initial rollout tested the new progression system, available for free to all. Shifting Tides is scheduled to launch with Phase 2, splitting into free and paid "premium" tracks, with rewards served for each.

This is the best external hard drive for your Xbox

$
0
0

During downtime, we like to enjoy the best of what the video game industry has to offer, and in doing so, we've used a ton of hard drives with the Xbox One for storing our ever-expanding library.

The Western Digital My Book is a worthwhile purchase for anyone looking to install a large number of games on their Xbox One, taking full advantage of a whopping 3TB of storage.

Our pick

Western Digital My Book

Western Digital My Book

Boasting a large amount of storage for the price

Western Digital makes some great mechanical drives and this My Book is a great external storage solution for your Xbox console.

Who should buy this external hard drive

If you find yourself filling up the internal drive of the Xbox One and need to keep clearing games you don't play too often, adding an external storage device like this 4TB unit from Western Digital will allow you to store many more. It's also reasonably priced, so you don't need to break the bank.

Is it a good time to buy this drive?

Yes. Any time is a good time to purchase an external drive (or storage in general). The prices of many new drives are reasonable right now. It's also possible to score some excellent deals on mechanical drive-touting enclosures like this WD unit.

Reasons to buy

  • From 3TB of space
  • Plug and play
  • Store countless more games

Reasons not to buy

  • Not as fast as an SSD
  • Need a spare outlet for power

Expand your Xbox One capacity

Not only are you investing in a quality storage brand in Western Digital, but the prices of the company's My Book line of external enclosures are incredibly competitive. Some purchasers have even found the drives contained within the products to be priced more as standalone units than when inside the My Book protective casing, so you know you're getting a solid deal for the Xbox One S or Xbox One X.

With games becoming more complex and sizes hitting insane amounts for downloads, it makes sense to pick up an external drive to offset some of the burdens, since the Xbox One S only comes with either 500GB, 1TB or 2TB of internal space, which simply isn't enough anymore. The Xbox One X suffers from similar storage constraints. Throw in a 4TB Western Digital My Book and you have up to 6TB of storage space.

WD has you covered with 4TB of space, ample enough for many games.

The My Book is essentially a WD drive plugged into a daughter circuit board, which then runs via USB to the Xbox One S. That's pretty much it, aside from the protective plastic casing, of course. No thrills, no cool LED lighting, but when all you require the drive to do is spin up with the Xbox and store games, that's pretty much all you could ever need in an external drive.

WD offers the My Book series in 3TB, 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 12TB and 16TB configurations. The latter two options are dual-drives, sporting larger cases with two drives inside. It all depends on how much you want to spend and how much capacity is required.

Alternatives to the WD My Book

The My Book isn't for everyone. If you demand the best speeds for load times, you'll want an SSD. Or perhaps you only require a drive, since you already have an enclosure. We rounded up some additional options to suit these needs.

Runner-up

Seagate Game Drive Hub

You'll likely never run out of space.

$159 at Amazon

When you need serious capacity and are a serious Xbox One gamer, this is the drive for you. Massive storage on a single drive.

With a massive capacity of 8TB, this Seagate Game Drive is ideal for those who need to store a colossal library of Xbox One titles on their consoles but only wish to make use of a single drive. It's also designed to fit right in with the Xbox console itself.

Value pick

Western Digital My Passport

Western Digital My Passport

More affordable than others

From $49 at Amazon

Want a portable drive you can take with you to various LAN events and Xbox parties? My Passport family of drives is worth a look.

Not only is the My Password from WD great value for 1TB, but it's also perfect for taking along for the ride to LAN events and parties where your Xbox may also have an invite. While it's not designed alongside the Xbox, there are numerous colors to choose from to match your taste.

Portable SSD

Samsung T5

Samsung T5

Don't spend too much money

$90 at Amazon

Sporting transfer speeds of up to 540 MB/s, the Samsung T3 external SSD package is a great solution to expand capacity.

What makes an SSD a worthwhile purchase for an Xbox One console are the read and write speeds, making it an ideal upgrade over the mechanical drives located inside the console. Samsung makes some of the best SSDs on the market so your collection of games is in good hands.

Speedy pick

Samsung 860 Pro

Samsung 860 Pro

Expensive, reliable and super quick

From $90 at Amazon

Wanting increased read and write speeds of SSDs over traditional hard drives? Samsung's 860 Pro series is among the best.

Samsung's PRO range of SSDs is incredibly fast considering they connect via slower SATA cables rather than hooking up through PCIe. This also makes them ideal for the Xbox One. All you need to do is purchase a small SSD enclosure to house this drive and manage the connection between it and your console, and you're good to go.

Bottom line

While you cannot go wrong when it comes to external hard drives, especially if you have a few units lying around and simply need to purchase an enclosure, we believe the best option for the Xbox One S and Xbox One X is the Western Digital My Book. Not only does it add an insane amount of storage to the console, but it also offers great reliability and portability.

With this external drive, it's possible to add up to 16TB of storage for your games. With console games getting larger over time, it's important to consider just how many you'll be able to save locally without having to deal with physical media, which is becoming obsolete.

Steam may be working on a cloud gaming service like Stadia or xCloud

Steam

There's going to be a lot of competition.

What you need to know

  • Steam may be working on a cloud gaming service to compete with Stadia or xCloud.
  • A technology called "Steam Cloud Gaming" was leaked by Steam Database.
  • It's unclear if this is remote play technology or an array of servers around the world.

Cloud gaming is the latest obsession gripping the video game industry, and it looks like Valve — the company behind the popular platform Steam — wants to get in on the action. We already know about Google Stadia, PlayStation Now, Project xCloud, and Shadow, but it looks like Valve is developing its own service. At least that's what a recent Steam Database post suggests.

The Twitter account said that Valve is working on a technology called "Steam Cloud Gaming" according to a partner site code update. The post added that "partners will need to sign an addendum to their terms." It's unclear what this means at the moment or what the scope of this is. In order to provide low-latency gaming, you need servers close to users. We haven't heard about Valve doing that at the moment, but you never know. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

What do you think the future of cloud gaming holds? Will it be a field where every publisher has its own service, or will they come under the umbrella of a console manufacturer like Microsoft or Sony? Let us know. It's definitely an exciting time to be a gmaer

Rainbow Six Siege CSRX-300

Get your first look at Operation Shifting Tides' new Operator gadgets, alongside a beastly bolt-action cannon.

Ubisoft has revealed Operation Shifting Tides, the fourth and final update headed to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege in 2019. Its first oceanic teaser provided a glimpse of the upcoming season, though formal details remain limited ahead of the scheduled November 10 reveal. And with two mysterious Operators from Indian and Kenyan origins, a leaked trailer confirms planned gadgets for the update.

Updated November 7, 2019: Ubisoft has released its first Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides trailer, following the earlier leak. The full Shifting Tides reveal remains on track for November 10.

Ubisoft looks to continue its trend of teasers preluding the Shifting Tides' reveal, as a leaked Operator gadget trailer surfaces online, seemingly posted prematurely in China. The one-minute trailer, since picked up by keen-eyed Reddit users, confirms prior Operator leaks for the expansion. In a similar vein to the first Operation Ember Rise trailer, the video provides a look at behind-the-scenes testing with Rainbow's fictional R&D director, Mira.

New CGI trailer Y4S4 from r/Rainbow6

An alleged Indian attacker appears to feature the "CSRX-300" bolt-action rifle, demonstrating a high-caliber round capable of penetrating multiple soft walls. The firearm also features an underslung "LV explosive Lance," which explodes upon impact. It could be our first glance at the rumored Thatcher alternative, introducing the second anti-gadget utility. However, with a clear explosion upon deployment, we may also see our fourth hard breacher.

The video also outlines the "Mag-NET System," which appears to be our new Kenyan defender deployable. The rumored "Jager competition" utilizes a disc capable of stopping and capturing throwables mid-flight. Earlier reputable leaks indicated the gadget would also detonate captured throwables, although currently remains unclear.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides is set for a November 10 reveal at the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals in Tokoname, Japan.

Rainbow Six Siege Jager ADS

Meet the next Rainbow Six Siege Indian and Kenyan Operators, Kali and Wamai.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege soon unveils its Operation Shifting Tides update, rounding up 2019 with two new Operators and the Theme Park rework. The latest content headed to the hit tactical shooter further diversifies its gadgetry lineup, exploring new Indian and Kenyan recruits. And with brief teasers scheduled ahead of the November 10 reveal, a new leaked gadget trailer appears to have named new Operators to drop with Shifting Tides.

The prematurely-posted teaser primarily focuses on new gadgets for the upcoming season, featuring a hard-hitting bolt-action sniper rifle with an underslung launcher, alongside an anti-projectile deployable rivaling Jager. Closer inspection also appears to name the season's two new Operators, our Indian attacker "Kali" and Kenyan defender "Wamai."

Rainbow Six Siege CSRX-300 Teaser

Rainbow Six Siege Shifting Tides Operator Icons

Shifting Tides' sharpshooter, Kali appears to derive from the Hindu goddess, often associated with time, creation, destruction, and power. Wamai is a name with Kenyan origins, aligning with official details first outlined via the Year 4 roadmap. Although not explicitly named as new Operator titles, both align with preexisting backstories. Two alleged Operator icons have also surfaced, as pictured. Expect formal confirmation over the days ahead, as new teasers drop.

Reputable leaks currently frame Kali with the CSRX-300 bolt-action sniper, with anti-gadget capabilities, providing a new alternative to Thatcher. Wamai sets out to rival Jager with a new counter for projectiles, expected to "suck in" and detonate throwables via a new "Mag-NET System."

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shifting Tides is set for a November 10 unveiling alongside the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals in Tokoname, Japan.

LucidSound LS1X review: Want a chat headset? Look no further.

LS1X headset

Chat headsets were in vogue during the Xbox 360 days, but they aren't as prominent as they once were. The LucidSound LS1X is a solid contemporary option for those who want something a little more retro.

Chat headsets were all the rage back in the Xbox 360 days, but modern gaming headsets that offer a more immersive experience have come a long way since then, seeing mono-piece chat headsets slip into the background a bit. The LucidSound LS1X, however, is a really great option for those looking for something a little simpler, like the good old days.

Here's our review of this uniquely premium (yet still affordable) mono piece.

LucidSound LS1X

$25

LS1X headset

Bottom line: The LS1X is a tremendous open back mono piece solution for those who need no-frills communication.

Pros:

  • Great chat audio quality
  • Comfortable and adjustable
  • Convenient on-ear controls
  • Great price

Cons:

  • Volume dial has flimsy action

What you'll love about the LucidSound LS1X

LucidSound LS1X

The LucidSound LS1X is a rare modern mono piece chat headset, complete with an open back design perfect for those with existing audio setups. It's also ideal for those who don't want to wear a bulky isolating headset and want something quick and straightforward for communicating over Xbox Live or other chat services.

CategorySpec
FormatOpen back monopiece
Connectivity3.5mm cable
Frequency response80 to 8,000 Hz
Weight122g
Price$25

Its unusually high-quality speaker makes for excellent sound reproduction for voice chat, making it one of the better headsets out there for hearing your teammates. The perforated speaker ensures that, despite wearing a headset, you'll still get the full audio from your external sound system in both ears.

One pitfall I often encounter with 3.5mm headsets it that, for whatever reason, the microphone picks up the audio from the person you're talking to. Thankfully this isn't the case with the LS1X. The highly-flexible microphone is also great for ensuring it's not positioned in an awkward place, regardless of your head shape. It also has a mute notification LED, which is a handy touch.

LucidSound LS1X

The mono piece headset has a volume control dial on the outer rim, along with a mute button baked into the middle. They function as expected, and give some added convenience rather than having to dig into the Windows or Xbox settings to adjust your audio experience.

The headset is generally comfortable, with airy fabric and an adjustable strap to keep it in place on your head. I would have liked to have seen a bit more foam across the top, but the headset is so light that it won't be an issue for the vast majority of people.

What you'll dislike about the LucidSound LS1X

LucidSound LS1X

There's very little to actually dislike about the LS1X, especially when you consider its generous $25 price. The 50mm speaker drivers, high-quality microphone, and polished sound experience exceeded my expectations, but it's clear LucidSound has made some uncharacteristic concessions to build quality.

LucidSound is generally known for premium quality, and at least from an outward standpoint, the headset certainly looks the part, with matte plastics with a few glossy trims and accents. The action on the volume dial is a little concerning, however, as the dial itself seems to grind against the plastic, making me wonder how long it will last in practice. Truth be told, you probably won't be using it very much anyway if you're only using the headset for chat audio. But really, that's the only flaw I could derive from a few days use with the product. It's simply good.

Should you buy the LucidSound LS1X?

LS1X

I've used a few contemporary mono piece headsets in recent times, and I have to say, the LS1X is by far the most impressive so far. LucidSound's attention to audio quality continues to impress, even in this affordable price range.

4.5out of 5

The construction doesn't feel as reassuring or dense as some of the LS1X's more expensive cousins, but if you take care of it, I doubt you'd have any issues. Simply put, this might be the best mono piece Xbox chat headset on the market today.

LucidSound LS1X

LS1X headset

Possibly the best mono piece Xbox chat headset money can buy.

If you're looking for a simple open back chat headset for communicating over Xbox Live, you won't be disappointed with the LS1X.

Should Halo use the Overwatch 2 approach for its multiplayer?

$

The Master Chief in the first Halo Infinite trailer.

Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan hopes that Overwatch 2's approach to the concept of a sequel will influence all of gaming. What would it look like if Halo followed suit?

During Blizzcon 2019, Blizzard Entertainment Vice President and Game Director of Overwatch Jeff Kaplan said in an interview with VG247 that he hopes Blizzard's approach to making Overwatch 2 will "influence the industry a little bit." Kaplan explains that losing all progression in the original game and having to engage with a new progression system in a sequel can be disheartening. However, he wants to see gaming evolve to allow players to carry their progress forward. Also, he also wants people not to feel "left behind" when a new game comes out.

Based on what we know so far, Overwatch 2 is indeed a prime example of this mindset. All of a player's cosmetics and stats will be moved from Overwatch to Overwatch 2 for free, both games will receive free new PvP content, and players of both games will be able to play together in PvP. What you'll be paying for with Overwatch 2 is access to a broad suite of player-versus-environment (PvE) story missions (you'll get the PvP as well, if you don't own the first Overwatch).

It's clear that Jeff Kaplan wants to get people thinking about how developers should approach the idea of a sequel, and that got me thinking about how this might hypothetically work for a franchise like Halo. Specifically, Halo Infinite's PvP, and whether or not the sequel to the game may benefit from the Overwatch 2-style of carrying a multiplayer experience into the future as opposed to the traditional idea of making a new multiplayer that goes along with new story campaigns.

The benefits

Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer.

I think the most significant benefit that would come from the sequel to Halo Infinite carrying Infinite's multiplayer forward as Overwatch 2 is doing with Overwatch would be the fact that players who are solely focused on PvP matchmaking could get access to all new PvP content for free. This would save a lot of money for PvP fans, as they would only have to purchase one game to always be playing the "current Halo multiplayer," as opposed to the past when people had to buy each new game for that.

A multiplayer supported beyond the normal amount of years would give 343 Industries time to fine-tune the gameplay to perfection.

Secondly, a multiplayer experience that would last as long as this would allow 343 Industries to fine-tune the gameplay as much as possible and make it the best it can be. This is one of the most significant issues I had with Halo 5: Guardians' PvP. The sandbox is arguably a bit of a mess, and many players aren't happy with it, but with Halo Infinite on the horizon, it seems that the days of Halo 5 receiving any balance update are long gone. With a unique multiplayer experience being supported and worked on for many years, 343's multiplayer balancing team would have the time to tweak the gameplay to perfection without feeling the heat of an upcoming release on its neck.

Finally, players would be able to carry over all of their Halo Infinite cosmetic unlocks, such as armor pieces or weapon skins, to this hypothetical sequel. This would be a great way to ensure that players get to show off what they earn in-game for a long time, as opposed to the traditional style of sequel releases that makes players unlock things all over again.

The (potential) drawbacks

Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer.

The biggest potential issue I have with this type of setup is that all of Halo's eggs would be in one basket. While things like balance would be able to be fine-tuned, if Halo Infinite's multiplayer is deeply flawed on a fundamental level, it would be awful for the Halo fanbase to be stuck with it for years and years. It's a considerable risk; having one awesome multiplayer that lasts for a very long time has serious potential to succeed, but a terrible multiplayer that lasts that long would be, well, terrible.

If post-launch content underwhelms, players may get bored of the gameplay, even if the game's foundation is excellent.

The next problem that might occur were this actually to happen is that 343 Industries' post-launch PvP content may underwhelm. In today's day and age of gaming, there's already a lot of pressure on developers to deliver satisfying additions to their games as-is. With a multiplayer like this, 343 would need to continuously provide satisfying content for a very long time, and failing to do so may cause fans to become bored with the gameplay experience, even if the foundation it's built on is excellent.

Lastly, there would be a lot of pressure on the PvE content of this sequel to sell well. Since all PvP additions would be free and players wouldn't need to buy a new game to play multiplayer if they already own Halo Infinite, Halo's continued financial earnings from the game side of the franchise would largely ride or die with the quality of the sequel's campaign and/or PvE expansions. If the series continues to have microtransactions, they may help alleviate that reliance, but I still think it will exist.

So, should Halo take this route?

Master Chief during the Halo Infinite E3 2019 trailer.

Honestly, while the benefits of this system are clear-cut and valid, this is a question that I can't answer without seeing how good Halo Infinite is first. Halo isn't the king of the shooter market like it used to be, and without knowing how well Halo Infinite performs beforehand, it would be pointless to try and determine what kind of risks its sequel should take. I think it's smarter to wait and see where the franchise's reputation stands following the launch of Halo Infinite and Project Scarlett, the next Xbox console.

While the rest of the Overwatch 2-style system is risky, a progression system that carries over is less so.

I do, however, feel that the sequel to Halo Infinite would benefit significantly from having unlockables carry over from Halo Infinite, at least to some degree. Allowing players to take their hard-earned items with them moving forward is a beautiful way to avoid some of those disheartening feelings that Jeff Kaplan was talking about. It would also make players feel like their time investment into Halo matters, even when new games come out and the previous ones fall out of popularity.

I'm curious to hear from you, though. Does the idea of a Halo multiplayer like what is described above appeal to you, or do you think the Overwatch 2-style of the PvP being included with PvE-focused sequels is too risky for the franchise? Are you undecided? Make sure to comment your thoughts.

These awesome Minecraft Bedrock Edition seeds are begging to be used

Minecraft landscape

In Minecraft, when starting a new world, you can choose a seed to spawn into a pre-determined world. We've rounded up some of the best that are sure to please.

Minecraft seeds allow you to create a pre-determined world to build in, making them incredibly useful if you want to have an initial spawn point near a village, dungeon, ravine, or other unique structure. You might even want to test your luck on a deserted island. Whatever you fancy, here are the best Minecraft seeds that work with all Bedrock Edition versions.

Create to your heart's content

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Probably the best game ever

Minecraft is the best-selling game ever, and for a good reason. It gives you the keys to an infinite blocky world in which you can build essentially anything that pops into your mind. Play it alone or play it with friends; you're going to have a great time.

A safe place, with a touch of variety

Minecraft seed example

A great seed to start off with if you want to take it slow, but don't want to handicap yourself with a monotonous world. You spawn in a lush forest surrounded by plains and a variety of other biomes, with a deep and rich cave pretty much directly below you to mine for resources in comfort.

There are no villages nearby, but sometimes you don't need the stress that comes with having to protect and defend a village from the frighteningly large number of enemies that they have. This is an excellent option if you just want to build in peace, but not be limited by the resources or areas you have access to.

Seed: 1238645065

A vast ocean on one side, a treacherous landscape on the other

Minecraft seed example

You awaken on an island surrounded on all sides by water (gasp). In one direction the ocean stretches out for eternity (or until Minecraft generates more terrain in that direction); in another, you spot mountains looming eerily in the distance, stretching out into the sky; on another, much larger island split in half by a menacing ravine dominates the landscape.

This is a seed if you want to take on nature headfirst. Survive with nothing but your wits and whatever wood you can punch out of a tree. Don't expect any help or haven from any villages. You're on your own here, bud.

Seed: -1992876879

A lovely village with some bewildering surroundings

Minecraft seed example

Want something a bit weird? Still want all of the basics? Don't want to compromise on your variety and still want to be surprised? You're really picky, but we still have something for you. Enter a beautiful village, with waterfront property and gorgeous forests and mountains surrounding it.

Look closer. Realize the taiga biome that surrounds it is for some reason half dirt (sans grass), half clay, half...cobblestone plus signs? Yeah, we're not entirely certain what happened with Minecraft's generator here either. Still, it's infinitely amusing and is the exact kind of thing that leads to some interesting theories and rumors in the Minecraft community.

Seed: 1937332094

Multiple villages, varied biomes

Minecraft seed example

This is one of my favorite seeds to start out on for any type of playthrough. From the spawn point, you're in close proximity to multiple villages in varied biomes, including acacia, plains, desert, mushroom forest, standard forest, and mountain. There's nothing particularly unique about this seed, but it's ideal if you like building varied structures in close proximity but in different biomes.

There's enough space to create a sprawling metropolis that incorporates all the unique villages, yet it has the topography needed for creative and multi-level builds. Scope out the surrounding area, and you'll no doubt find a deep ravine and an ocean that goes on for who knows how long.

Seed: 1388582293

Village cut with ravine, raid the stronghold

Minecraft seed example

This is an excellent seed if you like to immediately make friends with some villagers, but it's not just a village awaiting your arrival. Through the middle cuts, a deep ravine full of valuable natural resources and open mineshafts extending into the abyss.

Want to get in on some PvE action fast? One of the ravine's walls is the start of a stronghold (actually the library crammed with bookshelves), which you can raid to find valuables like spell books, ender pearls, and much, much more.

Seed: 2065486297

Take your chances on a deserted island

Minecraft seed example

Wake up on a deserted island home to sea turtles, a deep cave full of monsters, a few trees, and not much else. It's up to you to sail or swim to the small surrounding isles where you might have a better chance of finding valuables that will help you get to the end game.

If you prefer a challenge and are tired of the usual seeds where you can walk anywhere and set up shop, this is a great alternative that will test just how creative you can be. Be sure to check out the ice floes nearby the spawn island.

Seed: -1865786728

An outpost among villages

Minecraft seed example

If you're interested in checking out what pillager outposts can do to a village, you'll no doubt want to check out this seed. You spawn north of where all the action is, and by traveling a short distance from the mesa biome you spawn in down to the icy spikes, you will see an outpost and three nearby villages.

Knock down the outpost captain, get your Bad Omen effect, and head to a village to spawn a raid. An absolutely awesome seed if you're getting back into Minecraft after a couple of significant updates, and the varied vista isn't bad either.

Seed: 262834868

Deep ravine, desert temple, multiple villages

Minecraft seed example

Spawn in next to a desert temple that can be raided immediately — watch you don't set off the TNT hiding in the chest room — and set out to find two villages practically on top of each other, yet in different biomes.

If you're one for exploring deep spaces without the need for a pickaxe, there's also a deep, branching ravine full of water and lava between the villages and desert temple. It's a great place to start harvesting obsidian and all kinds of other natural resources without much effort.

Seed: FINAL

Desert village with outpost nearby

Minecraft seed example

This seeds drops you into the desert near a sprawling village that borders onto a knockout ravine full of lava and water. Surrounding the area are some low hills and another large village on the steppes of some larger mountains.

Nearby in the desert is a pillager outpost that keeps watch on the comings and goings, and you can be certain you'll soon hear from the inhabitants, especially if you eliminate the pillager captain and head back to one of the villages. Watch out for the raiding party!

Seed: 2048971879

Wetland trading and pillaging

Minecraft seed example

The lowlands you spawn into consist of a desert, hill, and forest biomes, stitched together with long, meandering rivers and buttes with high waterfalls you can use to build amazing castles and manors.

The area also happens to be packed with villages, temples, and an outpost smack in the middle, so you can be sure there are lots of things to do when you're not building bridges and lookout towers to keep an eye on trade and pillaging.

Seed: -709919370

A bustling life in the woods

Minecraft seed example

If you prefer to build your masterpiece in the woods, this seed should no doubt feel right at home. You spawn into thick trees that break onto a small plain that holds multiple villages and a tall outpost casting its shadow over the valley.

In the center of the clearing is a massive ravine stocked with easy-to-access valuable resources. To the north is the start of some impressive mountains spewing lava, as well as more villages nestled in the hills. Definitely check this one out if you prefer avoiding deserts and want to live green.

Seed: -2111305578

Mushrooms and shipwrecks

Minecraft seed example

This sprawling mushroom island is home to mushroom trees and mushroom cows, and the mainland is easily accessible if you need some familiar scenery. If you head into the water, though, you'll quickly find a shipwreck's mast poking its head out of the water, letting you know there's treasure to be found.

If that's not enough, on your way to the shipwreck, you should see the lights from an underwater monument where you can harvest prismarine and sponges. This is an excellent seed if you want to test out your water breathing potions.

Seed: 992826707

A little bit of everything

Minecraft seed example

This seed drops you into the middle of multiple villages in different biomes, with the closest to spawn sitting above an absolutely sprawling cave system accessed by an open pit next to a walkway.

Head out over land, and you'll soon come across other villages, a nearby pillager outpost, and a woodland mansion, all within view of each other. If you'd like a little taste of some rarities, this is an ideal seed.

Playtonic Games isn't joining Xbox Game Studios

Yooka-Laylee

It's not happening.

What you need to know

  • Playtonic is an independent studio behind Yooka-Laylee.
  • There were rumors floating around that it was being acquired because of a bag.
  • Playtonic said that this wasn't true and they weren't working on Banjo-Kazooie.

A few days ago, rumors were floating around that Playtonic Games was being acquired by Microsoft. The rumor started when an alleged employee wearing a Microsoft bag. I'm not sure how an old bag goes from being something someone found in an attic to a rumor of acquisition, but it happened. Either way, Playtonic had to clarify that it wasn't working on another Banjo-Kazooie game and was staying independent. You can read the company's statement on Twitter below.

There you have it, folks. Playtonic isn't going to be bought by Microsoft. Hopefully, this puts this rumor to rest because it made very little sense to begin with. What do you think of this whole saga? Let us know.
