NFL Draft on Xbox One

We are still several months away from the National Football League's 2015 season, but Microsoft is offering fans of pro football a quick preview with their coverage of this weekend's NFL Draft, which begins later tonight. The official NFL app for the Xbox One is getting some new features especially for the occasion.

The app will offer live streaming coverage of the draft, via the NFL Network. If you want to play a game while still keeping up with your favorite players, the app will snap to show a draft tracker with instant updates on what each team is doing. There are also new live and community polling features where fans can let their opinions be heard on if they approve of the players their favorite teams are picking.

Micorosoft adds:

"If you have a favorite player in the NFL Draft or want to be your own producer, there is no easier way to choose the highlights and analysis you want to watch, when you want to watch it. You can easily access all of the content and features with the new Xbox Draft Command Center, making it easier to stay in the know on the best screen in your house. Last, but certainly not least, there's the all-new Xbox Path to the Draft. You can follow the journeys of the top NFL prospects so you are prepared for the NFL Draft and ready to find the next rookie sensation for your fantasy football lineup."

Will you be keeping track of the NFL Draft with your Xbox One console?

Xbox API for Windows 10 games will still require certification

During Build, Operating Systems exec Terry Myerson demonstrated how an iOS game could be easily ported to Windows 10.

During the demonstration, Myerson obtained an Xbox Live achievement, "How do you like them Apples?", showing off the integration of Xbox APIs in Windows store apps.

We already have Xbox achievements on some Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 games which count towards your Xbox gamerscore, a pool of all the points you've accrued playing Xbox branded games. Seeing an achievement pop-up on a very basic math game made some concerned that the Xbox API could become open for any developer to use, regardless of the quality or uniqueness of their game. There's a lot of bad Flappy Bird clones in the store after all.

50 gamerscore for basic arithmetic? Really? Fear not! Microsoft have issued a statement:

...As we announced at GDC, we're delivering an Xbox Live SDK for Windows that enables developers of all sizes to build cross device experiences powered by Xbox Live. The demo showed at //build was for illustrative purposes to show that developers can use code built for Android or iOS apps and easily migrate them to Windows 10. Any use of Xbox Live services, such as awarding Gamerscore, will be in line with current policies, and awarding Gamerscore and earning Achievements requires a certification process for developers...

As expected, it turns out that Terry Myerson's demonstration was just a basic example. For a developer to contribute to the gamerscore pool, they must meet certain standards which will be in-line with what we already have.

...We are committed to bringing the same high quality achievements experience to Windows 10 in a way that does not trivialize or disrupt the gamerscore economy. We'll have more to share on this implementation at a later time...

As an Xbox fan, I've always seen the Xbox APIs as a really strong Windows Phone unique selling point. When I tell Xbox fans that some of their favourite mobile games carry Xbox achievements on Windows Phone, it's always a good hook. Gameloft and other major mobile game developers have reined in their support of the platform for reasons unknown, whilst Game Troopers have risen up to fill some of the Xbox for Windows publishing gap.

As Windows 10 furthers a developer's ability to port their games to and between Windows devices, we can only hope that Xbox for Windows gets the love it deserves (without providing achievements for every single match-three game that floods the store...)

All Xbox 360 owners can play online multiplayer games for free this weekend

Microsoft is unlocking the online multiplayer features in the Xbox 360 so that all owners of the console can play games online for free from Friday, May 1 to Sunday, May 3. Normally, playing online games requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live Gold.

If you are signed up for a free Xbox Live Silver account, that means you can play games online with friends like Battlefield Hardline, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, and the Grand Theft Auto Online Heists add-on for GTA V for the entire weekend.

The free multiplayer online time period is for all regions where the console is sold. Microsoft does say that not all Xbox 360 games with online multiplayer will be unlocked for free this weekend but it did not provide a list of those titles.

Dragon Age Inquisition getting free Dragonslayer DLC next week

Lately I've been quite taken with Resident Evil Revelations 2's multiplayer Raid mode, which finally received online multiplayer on Xbox One last week. Before that, my cooperative multiplayer game of choice was Dragon Age Inquisition from Electronic Arts. Inquisition has a small but addictive co-op mode that sits completely separate from the game's massive campaign.

While Dragon Age Inquisition multiplayer is a lot of fun for loot hunters, the mode's scant three areas certainly limit staying power. That will improve next week with the launch of the 'Dragonslayer' multiplayer DLC. The free downloadable content adds a new area with a dragon boss and three new characters to the fray.

With the new 'Dragonslayer' content coming to Dragon Age Inquisition in just a few days, now is the time to get into multiplayer and learn the ropes. Read on for our quick multiplayer guide and more 'Dragonslayer' update details.

Dragon Age Inquisition multiplayer

Getting into Multiplayer

Before you start Inquisition multiplayer, be sure to download the previous multiplayer DLC. The game won't notify you that you need it until you try to play with someone who has it. Nobody wants to be the guy who didn't prepare, so hurry up and grab it! And remember, when the 'Dragonslayer' DLC launches you'll have to download that too.

Initially, only three characters are available in multiplayer: the Archer, the magic-wielding Keeper, and the melee-focused Legionaire. Stick with multiplayer and you'll eventually unlock nine more classes. You can get these classes from chests (rarely) or by crafting the armor they wear.

Upon choosing your starter character, be sure to visit the multiplayer Store to pick up the free chests that all players receive. These chests offer a random assortment of equipment and consumable items. You'll want to equip your character with anything he or she can use that offers higher stats than the starting gear.

Next you can host a game (and invite friends if you like) or join an existing game. Up to four players can quest together. Some doors can only be opened by specific classes (melee, ranged, and magic wielding) so try to build a well-balanced team if possible.

Dragon Age Inquisition multiplayer

Multiplayer offers three difficulty levels, each one recommended for a specific range of character levels. Start with Routine and don't move on to higher difficulties until your team can safely complete Routine levels.

Each of the existing three multiplayer levels consists of five distinct sections. Your goal is to move through each section, clearing it of enemies and searching for chests and other loot. At the end of the fifth area you'll face a challenging boss battle.

Don't be discouraged if your team can't survive the boss. The experience you earn will level up your character, allowing him or her to learn new abilities that will make the next run easier. And whenever you accumulate 1200 gold you'll want to buy a chest in hopes of gaining better equipment.

Dragon Age Inquisition multiplayer is much simpler than the single-player game. But teaming up with friends, building up a character, and searching for loot still proves to be an enjoyable and relaxing experience. Give the multiplayer mode a try and let us know how you like it!

Dragon Age Inquisition multiplayer Isabela

Dragonslayer update

This latest multiplayer update adds an all-new Fereldan castle, although we don't know the name of the actual area. It will be a specific selectable level though, much like the existing three levels. And the area will culminate in Inquisition multiplayer's most epic boss fight yet…

Yes, we'll be teaming up to fight a flying dragon. Given the fairly sizable role that dragons play in the single-player campaign, it's both fitting and exciting that we'll finally be able to team up with friends to battle one.

The 'Dragonslayer' update also adds three new agents to multiplayer. Presumably, these are playable heroes and not just NPCs. All of the existing playable multiplayer characters have names too, it turns out. You just don't see them outside of the character select screen.

The new heroes are:

  • Skywatcher, an Avvar warrior from the Fallow Mire. Skywatcher appears in the Fallow Mire area in the main Inquisition campaign.
  • Zither the Virtuoso (pictured below). Originally teased as an April Fool's joke, Zither is a bard who plays a lute and plays songs that act like spells.
  • Isabela the Raider Queen of the Eastern Seas (pictured above). She first appeared in Dragon Age: Origins as an NPC, and later became a playable companion in Dragon Age II. I believe Isabela is the first playable character from past Dragon Age games to appear in Inquisition multiplayer.

Finally, the 'Dragonslayer' also mentions that players will be able to "craft the Dragon's Call." The nature of this item remains to be seen.

Tip: If watching the stream in another window, close this one to avoid audio echoes.

Divekick

Most fighting game players will tell you, the most exciting moment in a match is when one player has no more life left to lose. That make or break moment is every moment in Divekick. Both players have life meters, and yet, one hit is all it takes to knock either competitor out and win the round. It takes multiple rounds to win the match, but that Bushido Blade-like element of trying to land that one vital blow is still there.

The one-hit mechanic would be different enough, but Divekick takes things a step further. Fights use exactly two buttons, with no input from the d-pad or stick (though you can assign either button to a direction on the d-pad). But those two buttons offer surprising versatility.

Divekick: Addition Edition

You have the dive button, which jumps, and a kick button. Tapping kick while standing while perform a backwards hop, allowing you to dodge or move away from your opponent. Jump in the air first though, and you'll pull off the all-important divekick. A divekick is a jump kick in which your character flies towards the ground at an angle. Yeah, this game is pretty much all divekicks, hence the title.

Divekick offers a single-player mode with humorous stories for all 14 characters, plus local and online multiplayer. If you're looking for an easy fighting game to get into, this is the one. Check out our full review for more details.

Threes for Xbox One

Threes

Popular puzzle game Threes finally arrived on Windows Phone earlier this week, and for free no less! What better way to celebrate than by playing the game on Twitch and dishing out codes for the premium Xbox One and iOS versions, I ask you?

Threes might look complex at a glance, but it's actually very simple. The field consists of sixteen tiles. These tiles have numbers on them, ranging from 1 all the way to some big numbers that give me headaches just thinking about them.

Swipe vertically or horizontally on the analog stick or screen to try to move all of the tiles on the screen in that direction. If the number on a tile can be combined with the tile it would be sliding into, the two will combine to form a larger number.

For instance, one and two can be combined to make the magic number three. Every other number after that must be added to the same number. Two threes make six, two sixes make twelve, a pair of twelves makes 24, and so on.

Threes for Xbox One

Matching the same numbers sounds easy enough, but Threes does become challenging after a few moves. Different numbers (other than one and two) can't be combined. If you end up with two many incompatible numbers on the field, you'll run out of moves to make. And once that happens, it's game over.

Threes is a great fit for mobile play. Playing it on Xbox One is a little different, since you can't just whip out your Xbox One for a few minutes while standing in line at the liquor store. But Hidden Variable has done a great job of making it work on consoles. Moving the tiles with the stick is perfectly simple.

Best of all, Threes can be played while snapped to the side of the screen. So you can watch Daredevil on Netflix while playing Threes on the side of the screen. No other Xbox One game to date offers the play-while-snapped feature. Check out Mark's hands-on story for more impressions.,

Divekick: Addition Edition

Batman: Arkham Knight

More details have been revealed about what will be included in the Season Pass for the super-hero open world action game Batman: Arkham Knight. One of them will be a DLC single player expansion where Batgirl will be a playable character.

Earlier in the week, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive announced that the Season Pass for Batman: Arkham Knight would be priced at $39.99 for six months worth of post-release DLC content. However, the publisher only gave a very general overview of what would be included at that time. This weekend, the game's Facebook page offered up more details about some, but not all, of the DLC content.

  • An all new prequel story expansion in an entirely new location where you play as Batgirl for the very first time in the Arkham series.
  • The Season of Infamy - Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.
  • Gotham City Stories - Play as Batman's key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.
  • Legendary Batmobiles with Themed Tracks - Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman's 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile's specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.
  • Crimefighter Challenge Maps - Engage in a series of new challenge maps utilizing the unique play styles of Batman and his allies.
  • Character Skins - A variety of skins from across the eras for Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman.

Batman: Arkham Knight is scheduled to be released on on June 23 for the Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 from developer Rocksteady.

The next Xbox One game from Rare could be revealed by Microsoft at E3 2015

Rare Headquarters

Rare's Creative Director Simon Woodroffe hinted strongly this weekend that the next Xbox One game from the Microsoft-owned UK developer could be revealed at E3 2015 in June.

Woodroffe used his Twitter account to answer fan questions, but apparently he revealed more than he should as his feed has since been locked out for everyone except his confirmed followers. Before that happened, IGN posted up his messages to fans. One of them stated, "E3 will tell the world what Gregg Mayles new project is about." Mayles is a designer at Rare who has worked on games like the Donkey Kong Country series, Banjo-Tooie, and Viva Pinata.

Another person then asked if the game is original or based on an existing IP. Woodroffe responded with, "All I can give here is a quote from the man himself, 'This is more fun than anything we've ever done.'"

Rare has been working on Kinect-exclusive games for the past few years, including Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports: Season Two for the Xbox 360 and Kinect Sports Rivals for the Xbox One. There are rumors that Microsoft is planning a revival of one of Rare's older game franchises, Battletoads.

E3 2015 will be held in Los Angeles from June 16-18, but Microsoft has plans to hold its E3 press conference in LA on June 15. Windows Central will be there to get first hands reports on all of Microsoft's announcements.

This Week in Xbox One News - Silent Hills canned, DX12, Watch Dogs 2, and more! (May 3rd 2015)

$
0
0

Welcome to our weekly ICYMI for Xbox news!

This week, we're looking at the death of Silent Hill, DX12, Watch Dogs 2 and more!

We'll still be posting major Xbox announcements in the main feed, but I'll be collecting some of the more nuanced news, rumours and talking points into one handy post every weekend!

So without further ado, here's our latest edition of This Week in Xbox One News.

Konami hates games, apparently. RIP Silent Hills.

Silent Hills - initially tipped to be the latest high-profile release in the Silent Hill franchise, has been killed by Konami, following continuing internal turmoil at the Japanese company.

Right now, there's little redeeming news emerging from Konami, and these latest developments are certain to inflame things rather than calm them. The news broke via actor Norman Reedus, who had been lovingly rendered for the trailer that appeared after completing the PS4 exclusive P.T. Silent Hills teaser.

The brief, but intense teaser was lauded as being the greatest Silent Hill experience in years. Despite involvement from Norman Reedus, Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima, Konami has let the 'embryonic' project die unceremoniously.

...Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles. However, the early 'Silent Hills' project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.

Eagle-eyed fans noted a cryptic radio track in the P.T. teaser, which may have been Kojima's fourth-wall breaking message to fans that Silent Hills would never see the light of day.

...Dad was such a drag. Every day he'd eating the same kind of food, dress the same, sit in front of the same games. Yeah, he was just that kind of guy. But then one day, he goes and kills us all! He couldn't even be original in the way he did it. I'm not complaining... I was dying of boredom anyway. But guess what? I will coming back, and I'm bringing my new Toys with me...

It's too coincidental to be ruled out, in my mind. This whole sorry story leaves a hole in my gut where Silent Hills should've been. If you're feeling optimistic, you can drop your signature on this 65,000 strong Change.org petition to rescue Silent Hills.

Konami leaves the US Stock Exchange

All this is in addition to Konami de-listing themselves from the US stock exchange. While the de-listing isn't as significant as some had initially thought, it does signal that Konami are examining the way they conduct their business, which isn't limited only to games publishing.

It certainly seems as though both Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid franchises will suffer immeasurably at the hands of Konami sans Kojima, whose games business has been increasingly shifting away from big budget console titles. Are match-3 Candy Crush clones with Silent Hill branding on the horizon? This cynical gamer believes its likely.

Final Fantasy XV running DX12 blows minds at Build

While not directly related to Xbox, Microsoft and Square Enix demonstrated how DX12 can render near-photo-realistic graphics in-engine using the highest end SLI GPU hardware. In the demo, Microsoft's John Shewchuk elaborated that the graphics shown were live, not pre-rendered, sporting 8k x 8k textures.

There's a lot of confusion about how DX12 will affect Xbox One, but ultimately it'll depend on developers to utilize it once it goes live. Some of the benefits DX12 brings are already available to developers on Xbox One, but the biggest gains will likely be seen by lower end PC GPUs like that found in the Surface Pro 3. Fable Legends will be amongst the first games on Xbox One to utilize the new APIs, with more expected to follow towards the end of 2015 and beyond.

Speaking of Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix are planning to update... the demo?

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD shipped with Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae, a fully playable demo of the latest ridiculously long-in-development addition to Square Enix's flagship franchise. As a long time fan of the series, I went hands-on with the game and found it to be intriguing, but deeply flawed.

FFXV director Hajime Tabata took to YouTube to confirm that Episode Duscae will be patched with updates and improvements and offered a massive list of changes they're making based on fan feedback.

The list includes fixes to the camera controls, including adding options to alter camera behaviour. Improvements to presentation, including the addition of anti-aliasing and frame rate improvements and the addition of a mini-map/radar. Finally, you also get the ability to cancel attacks in order to dodge, and general bug fixes. The session exposed differences between Japanese and Western gamers feedback, with players in the EU and US complaining FFXV was too easy, while the Japanese complaining the opposite.

The update is expected to go live sometime in May, so, if you're eager, keep that demo on your hard drive!

Watch Dogs 2 in development, surprising no-one

Franchise hungry Ubisoft are undoubtedly at work on a follow up to the over-hyped Watch Dogs, and an NDA breaking LinkedIn profile may be the first confirmation of that fact. VideoGamer spotted that Ubisoft Paris' Julien Risse, listed Watch Dogs 2 under projects in development.

Hype aside, I found Watch Dogs to be a thoroughly enjoyable game overall. An E3 announcement seems inevitable, but lets hope Ubisoft handles it with a little more care than the rushed out Assassin's Creed Unity.

Batman: Arkham Knight has an expensive season pass, now detailed

The internet was ablaze with anger over WB Games' pricey season pass for the hotly anticipated Batman: Arkham Knight. For $40 / £32, WB Games was expecting fans to jump in on the back of vague promises for monthly DLC updates, neglecting to offer solid detail on what those updates would include.

Well, WB has offered some detail to go along with that price tag.

The season pass will include new story missions, featuring "legendary super-villains", as well as new missions for supporting characters. It will also include skins for characters, as well as the Batmobile - comprised of various versions of the iconic vehicle from Batman's extensive history. Adam West's maybe?

WB led the announcement with artwork of Batgirl, who will make her appearance in a stand-alone story solely for Season Pass owners.

As someone who doesn't typically pick up season passes, this new info combined with the cost of entry leaves me unconvinced. How do you feel about it?

Fighting game renaissance continues as SoulCalibur dev solicits feedback

Project Soul is the internal Bandai Namco studio at the helm of SoulCalibur, a beloved weapons-based fighting franchise that has yet to appear on new gen consoles.

SoulCalibur's official Facebook Page is requesting fans to "Vote for the future of Soul Calibur" in a new survey.

Calling all SoulCalibur Fans! Project Soul would like to hear your voice. They need to determine precisely who are the favorite characters of the community! Beware, you can vote only once so choose carefully and wisely...

You can drop a vote here, but if you're not voting for Yoshimitsu, Cervantes or Siegfried you're doing it wrong.

New Xbox One game releases for the week ending May 3rd, 2015

Project Root - Shmup - OPQAM

"Paying homage to the classic SHMUP, Project Root throws players into the front lines of the rebellion to battle against a never ending collection of enemy aircraft, swarms of missile attacks, legions of tanks and engage in frenetic boss battles to strike at the root of the evil Prometheus Corp."

Shovel Knight - Action Adventure - Yacht Club Games

"Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic."

State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition - Open-World Survival Horror - Undead Labs

"State of Decay: Year-One brings the hit zombie survival-fantasy franchise to Xbox One. Delivered in beautifully remastered 1080p, along with improved lighting, textures, animations, and combat mechanics, State of Decay: Year-One pulls you even deeper into the post-outbreak world."

And that's a wrap!

Games companies are keeping the latest developments close to their chest ahead of June's E3, as such news is a bit thin on the ground this week. Sometime this week I'll be publishing an article all about my most anticipated E3 news, pains me to acknowledge Silent Hills won't be amongst the announcements. Have a great week guys.

Unity Technologies details its partnership with Microsoft HoloLens

Unity 3D is one of the most powerful cross-platform games development engines available today, powering dozens of experiences from Xbox One to Windows Phone.

During the Build 2015 keynote, it was revealed that Unity 3D is partnering with Microsoft on HoloLens development, and the development team have recently confirmed on their blog that HoloLens will enjoy full support from the Unity engine.

Holograms for all! We've expanded our strategic collaboration with Microsoft to include full support for Microsoft HoloLens holographic computer. Microsoft made the announcement today during the keynote at the Build conference in San Francisco.

Unity 3D not only powers games, but 3D modelling for all sorts of virtualised products, albeit previously confined to screens. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the 3D experiences we saw at Build today were in-fact running on Unity.

Unity tools will support HoloLens spatial mapping, audio, gaze, gesture, voice recognition, and app anchoring - such as pinning Netflix onto your walls. The company also touts improvements to the integration between Unity and Visual Studio, to improve efficiency when it comes to creating non-gaming 3D experiences - presumably like the medical models seen in todays presentation.

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Marketing exec Yusuf Mehdi praised the partnership:

...Expanding our relationship with Unity Technologies was a natural next step in bringing content to Microsoft HoloLens. We are very excited to unveil this partnership and look forward to the possibilities it will open for developers creating experiences for Microsoft HoloLens...

Unity's VP of Strategic Technology Steffen Toksvig touted the range of sectors Microsoft are targeting with the exciting new tech:

...Microsoft HoloLens unshackles game and app designers from traditional screens creating a freedom to completely reimagine how we view and interact with information, education, entertainment, creative tools, social networks, remote healthcare and more...

Unity for HoloLens will be bundled with Unity Pro and Unity Personal Edition for free, and considering ID@Xbox games developers get these toolsets for free as well, that's already dozens of potential games developers for Microsoft's fledgling holographic platform.

The range of applications for HoloLens is staggering. Beyond industries like architecture, engineering and medicine, HoloLens will also be making its presence known at the games industry's biggest event - E3, and with Unity's backing, there's certainly a lot to look forward to.

Star Wars Battlefront will have 12 multiplayer maps for launch, including Sullust

Star Wars Battlefield

Electronic Arts will launch their highly anticipated shooter Star Wars Battlefront with 12 multiplayer maps when it launches for the Xbox One and other platforms November 17. That includes one map set on Sullust, which has been mentioned but never seen in the official Star Wars movies.

You may remember that in Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader mentions to the Emperor a rumor that the Rebel Fleet is gathering near Sullust. Well, in Star Wars Battlefront that planet is now imagined as a rather hostile location with "black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke". The development team at DICE traveled to Iceland to get some references photos of the terrain for use on the Sullust map.

The 12 multiplayer maps don't include the ones that will be a part of the game's co-op themed Missions feature. You can also bet there will be additional maps released as part of DLC packs following the launch of Star Wars Battlefront this fall.

Review: State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition for Xbox One

$
0
0

I firmly believe State of Decay is Microsoft's not-so-secret weapon in the increasingly voracious console war.

World of Warcraft lead programmer Jeff Strain left Blizzard to head up Undead Labs, and from day one, the end goal was a full-blown zombie apocalypse MMO.

State of Decay is not an MMO, however - it is purely single player. The game acts as proof of concept for Undead Labs' long-term plans. To describe State of Decay and its Xbox One edition as prototypes is a disservice because I believe with conviction that this is amongst the best games on Xbox today.

Intro

State of Play

There are tons of zombie games out there nowadays. This year alone we've had high profile launches from Dying Light and Zombie Army Trilogy, both with their unique aspects. Dying Light is a cross between Skyrim and Mirror's Edge, taking place in a gory sandbox playground; Zombie Army Trilogy is similar to Left 4 Dead, sending four co-operative partners through epic zombie-laden gauntlets. State of Decay however, is more difficult to categorise. I don't think it's hyperbolic to say that State of Decay is unique and stands alone amidst a deluge of other games that revolve around battling hordes of the undead.

State of Decay was originally an Xbox 360 game, based on CryEngine 3. It released through Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft's digital-only platform typically assigned to smaller games. State of Decay took Xbox fans by surprise and was my personal game of the year in 2013 - it wasn't without flaws though. The original plagued with crashes, long load times, quirky A.I., strange physics and other anomalies that you may associate with a small indie title, rather than a Microsoft Studios game. Regardless of these smaller issues, State of Decay rose to the fore with unique and challenging gameplay, combined with an addictive and satisfying base management metagame.

In this Xbox One edition of the game, has State of Decay repaired the flaws of the original? Or is it quick and dirty funding round for the inevitable State of Decay 2?

On Presentation

Day 1: Trumball Valley has gone to Hell

State of Decay spares no time throwing you into the action. You assume control of Marcus Cambell, who is fighting for his life against a cadre of cadavers in what was supposed to be a relaxing hiking trip. Something is dead wrong, but for now, your only objective is to survive.

I think it's fair to say the original State of Decay was a moderately ugly game, even by 360 standards. Low draw distance, muddy texturing and toy-like character models can raise an eyebrow (or not, characters don't have expressions), and Year One Survival Edition isn't much different. Although aspects have improved graphically, it's a game that strongly resembles its older, uglier sibling. The resolution has been given a bump up to 1080p, but low poly textures emphasise that 1080p resolution is just a buzzword rather than an all-encompassing measure. Enhancements to shadows, lighting and anti-aliasing are welcome bonuses, but still; cutting-edge, it ain't. At least they didn't slap the "HD" suffix on it and shipped it as a full price title... looking at you Final Fantasy Type-0 HD.

A lot of what makes State of Decay immersive, however, is in its hypnotically engaging gameplay.

Does any of this matter though? Not really. Despite sporting dated graphics, State of Decay is amongst the most immersive games out there today. Trumball Valley is diverse and detailed and begs to be explored (and explore you will, for you have no choice - more on that later). There's an undercurrent of authenticity which penetrates all aspects of the game's presentation; from the sickening crunch of zombie skull on a baseball bat to simple things like different stores carrying different names and branding. State of Decay leaves a satisfying impression of the meticulous design, which evokes a fondness for other power-house open-world games like Grand Theft Auto.

Visuals aside, State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition also carries around 30 minutes of new music, and it compliments what a stellar soundtrack was. The inspirations are clear and diverse. Not only will you reminisce of George A. Romero's 80s zombie classics, but you'll also sink into more contemporary bleakness from Godspeed You! Black Emperor's famous feature on 28 Days Later. The music is dynamic as well, heightening in tension as zombies encroach, before fading into a hopeless melancholy as you travel across both Trumball Valley and Danforth.

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition may not be packing the polygon count of Ryse or even last gen's Grand Theft Auto V, but there is a painstaking thoughtfulness throughout its high-density locales.

The important aspects of presentation are solid and cohesive, and occasionally enthralling. I'm stoked to see what these guys do with a bigger budget and considering that Microsoft has entered into a multi-title deal with them, we may just get that.

A lot of what makes State of Decay immersive, however, is found in its hypnotically engaging gameplay.

On Gameplay

Day 24: At war with the zombie horde

State of Decay is not your typical open world zombie game. The emphasis is firmly on survival, and State of Decay is the closest thing to a full on zombie-apocalypse survival-simulator we have on Xbox One, having more in common with Minecraft than Left 4 Dead.

You start in either Trumball Valley or Danforth, depending on whether you select the base game or the Lifeline DLC, and your quest is to survive. Striking out, you'll eventually fight your way to your first community hub - which becomes your base of operations. Within these bases (you can move to larger ones as your community grows), you can set up watch towers, larger living quarters, medical centres and other important zombie apocalypse survival facilities. Each building you develop can upgrade in kind, and provides material bonuses as well as passive. You cannot build these facilities indefinitely though, for they all require resources, which you must acquire for yourself. I'm just scratching the surface here, but the base-building and maintenance taps that prehistoric survival itch, comparable to that found in Minecraft's survival mode.

Throughout your survival in Danforth and Trumball Valley, you'll undertake various tasks; from raiding gun shops and grocery stores for supplies, to rescuing survivors and story missions. Both the base game and the bundled Lifeline DLC have a story campaign. The former is all about the outbreak and discovering how to escape the valley quarantined by the army. The Lifeline DLC centers on the army as they try to make sense of the apocalypse and find a cure.

Whether you're in the base game or one of the bundled DLCs, you don't play as any one character, but as the entire community of survivors, each with their unique skills and specializations. The character you're currently controlling will eventually get tired, maybe even injured, at which point it's smart to switch to another character while your favorite recovers. Injury healing, resting, research and building projects all proceed in real time, whether you're active in the game or offline. These gameplay aspects form just a part of State of Decay's ever evolving world.

Those dynamic moments when your car breaks down, and you're cornered in a building without ammo and meds are hard to reproduce in other games, and serve as State of Decay's strongest unique selling point.

Undead Labs provide a huge arsenal of tools for survival, bolstered further by additions from the Year One Survival Edition. Every action you take has consequences. Guns are powerful, and a snap headshot can instantly kill any regular zombie. Without a silencer (and often with one), the noise will attract other hungry walkers to your location. Your survivors don't have powerful magic pockets either, inventory space is sorely limited, meaning that your ammo will deplete fast unless you carefully manage its use.

It's often far more economical to fight zombies using melee weapons - not only do they produce less noise, but it's easier to procure them on-site should you suffer a breakage. The limitations of inventory are an important factor in creating tension, as it's an ever-present reminder to not stray too far from safety. Those dynamic moments when your car breaks down, and you're cornered in a building without ammo and meds are hard to reproduce in other games and serve as State of Decay's strongest unique selling point.

All skills develop and grow over time. Wielding blunt, edged, or heavy weapons eventually allow the player to choose one of the two special attacks. Other stats also provide passive and active bonuses as they level up. State of Decay has been updated to make it easier to accrue the EXP needed to upgrade to these skills, meaning that your community will be formidable quite quickly when compared to the original game.

Combat is one of the primary areas Undead Labs has focussed on when it comes to upgrading from the original 360 version. Hand to hand combat has been replaced with an unbreakable knife, to ensure you're never completely harmless, and there are new weapon types that allow for attachments, like underslung grenade launchers and so on. Combat in State of Decay is heavy and satisfying, but you're always vulnerable, Year One Survival Edition is no different in this regard.

It's always easy to get overwhelmed if you're not careful, and if that character you spent hours developing skills for dies, that's it - they're dead. The perma-death in State of Decay can create a vivid sense of desperation, particularly if a mission sends you far afield from supplies and backup. Drawing a comparison to Minecraft again, character's belongings land where they've died. It forces you to make a decision about whether to risk another character recovering those unique Year One Survival Edition weapons or, leave them to the zeds. You never feel entirely safe unless you're bunkered down in your home base, but remaining inactive will see your supplies dwindle, morale crumble, as your community eventually succumbs to a slow death.

Final Words

Day 132: This place is like Fort Knox, almost

Year One Survival Edition contains all the updates from the 360 version, including the ability to place supplies in the trunk of a vehicle and asking other characters to accompany you as you venture out from your base. Sadly, Undead Labs have neglected to update NPC path finding errors, quest triggering problems and crashing issues which marred the original game. Far too often have I had to reboot the game in order to force NPCs to follow me on a mission if I was feeling too frustrated to push them to the quest triggering zones.

Year One Survival Edition additions such as Gurbani Kaur, new weapons, vehicles and mission types and a graphical makeover add flavour for veterans returning to the game. However, I'm concerned that it may not convince Xbox One newcomers of the game's quality at first glance, at least those who may be unaware of Undead Labs' long term plans with Microsoft.

Pros:

  • Unique and challenging gameplay
  • Welcome improvements to graphics
  • Great value price point

Cons:

  • Systemic bugs from original unfixed
  • Generally unpolished

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is still the beloved (and buggy) survival game from the Xbox 360. It reminds us what Xbox One owners potentially have to look forward to in future additions to this special franchise.

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is available now on Xbox One for £19.99 / $29.99 (with 33% off if you own the original).

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood hits digital shelves today on Xbox One and PC

Wolfenstein: The New Order picks up a standalone prequel expansion today, dubbed The Old Blood.

Set in the 1940s, this prequel takes us back to Castle Wolfenstein, two decades before the events of The New Order. BJ has set upon a daring mission to infiltrate and eliminate Death's Head in his own compound.

The Old Blood tells a lighter, brisker story, and won't feature the gritty bleakness found in Wolfenstein: The New Order. BJ picks up new weapons in Wolfenstein's latest outing, including a bolt-action rifle, heavy double barrelled auto-shotgun and a grenade launching Kampfpistole. In addition to slaughtering 1940s retro-cyber Nazis with brand new stealth take-downs, BJ will battle the undead products of Reich experiments.

The asking price for this 5-8 hour FPS adventure is just $19.99 / £14.99, which seems more than reasonable as a fan. It launches today as a digital-only title on Xbox One, PC and PS4, with a retail release coming on May 15th.

Portal Pinball

Zen Studios is teaming up with Valve for Portal Pinball, a new table for the Pinball FX2 game for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. The new table will be released the week of May 25.

Portal Pinball will bring Valve's world of Aperture Science, which it created for the classic puzzle games Portal and Portal 2, down to a pinball table as players hit their flipper buttons and try to navigate through the sometimes treacherous landscape. Here's what Zen Studios has to say about the game:

"Guide Chell and Wheatley through test chambers by navigating portals, using aerial faith plates, defeating turrets and facing other obstacles, and battling against GLaDOS as you attempt to escape the facility and reach the surface. Team up with ATLAS and P-Body for their Cooperative Testing Initiative Multiball and wreak havoc on the Turret Factory by discovering Ratman's hidden mini-playfield."

While there's not an official trailer for Portal Pinball yet, some media outlets got a chance to take gameplay videos of an early version of the table. There's no word yet on what the price will be for the Portal Pinball add-on. And just remember the cake is a lie.

Xbox One to add TV DVR features sometime in 2015, claims new rumor

Xbox One

A new rumor claims that Microsoft will add some kind of TV DVR features to its Xbox One console, possibly by the end of 2015. The news comes in the wake of Microsoft confirming that it will not provide the Windows Media Center features in Windows 10.

Paul Thurrott, who has covered the Microsoft beat for a long time and has sources inside the company, mentions the Xbox One TV DVR addition in his post about the end of Windows Media Center today.

"Of course, many Media Center fans actually use the product to record and watch TV shows via Media Center PCs in the living room. Microsoft's solution for this need will apparently be the Xbox One, though the console currently only provides live TV watching, but not recording. My sources tell me that will change, and most probably this year, to include TV recording."

Rumormeter 7

Microsoft has promoted the Xbox One as a TV set-top box since its launch, offering users a way to watch live television through the console, along with their their current TV listings in the UI. Microsoft sells an optional digital TV tuner for the Xbox One in Europe and recently added support for over-the-air TV tuners in the US and Canada.

However, the current 500GB hard drive size for the Xbox One could be an issue for any DVR feature as Xbox One owners will likely have games and other media stored on the drive already. If Microsoft were to add this feature in an upcoming software update, owners will likely have to purchase an external hard drive to store their TV recordings.

Thanks to Brent for the tip!

EA's new Need For Speed game due this fall, new Mirror's Edge coming in 2016

Mirror's Edge

Electronic Arts revealed plans to launch three previously unannounced games today as part of its quarterly financial results. Among them is a new entry in its long running racing series Need For Speed in the fall of 2015, plus new entries in its Mirror's Edge and Plants Vs Zombies franchises in the first quarter of 2016.

The listings show that all three games are due for the console and PC, which likely means that they will be available for the Xbox One, and maybe for the Xbox 360. No other details were revealed about these titles, but its likely EA will show one or more of these games during E3 2015 in June.

This will be the first new console and PC Need For Speed game from EA since Need for Speed Rivals in 2013. EA released Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare, a multiplayer shooter, for the Xbox One in early 2014. However, the big news is for the new Mirror's Edge game. Developer DICE released the sci-fi first person action game in 2009 for the Xbox 360 and PC, among other platforms. While it achieved critical acclaim, sales of the title were not as high as expected. However, EA has dropped many hints that plans for a sequel were in the works, and today's reveal confirms it.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 to grind its way onto the Xbox One and Xbox 360 later this year

Rumors have been swirling around this game since early 2014 and last year at E3 Tony Hawk went on record saying that they were working on the next Tony Hawk game. Well here we are today, and it has become officially official. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 will be heading to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 later this year.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5, as the name implies, is a return to the games roots. The game is a call back to its prime when the controls were finely tuned, and gameplay was over the top and fun. Once again, you will be skating around looking for floating DVDs and COMBO letters and trying to get the highest score possible.

The game is also said to feature some new additions such as level specific power-ups and the ability to shoot projectiles for individual missions. For example, one level features a power-up that makes your board move faster once you grind all the rails in that level.

As for the missions, they are no longer played out by a story and instead are played as "objectives" that take place on certain levels. The missions and objectives in each level can all be played solo or cooperatively with your friends online.

The game is said to be able to jump from online to offline play seamlessly. When you're playing online, levels are filled with fellow online skaters so that it feels alive and like a real free-for-all session. The devs are said to be still working on how many players should populate each level.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 brings back some of your favorite skaters (Tony Hawk being one of them) to play as, as well as some new big names in the skating community. You can also play as your own created player although there is no indication of the customization options that the Tony Hawk Underground series made so famous.

All in all, the game seems like it's on the right track to getting back to its roots while modernizing some of the things that made it fun. We're looking forward to hearing more about the game next month at E3.

Xbox One picks up the ability to record games in 60 fps

$

I don't think anyone can fault Microsoft for the break-neck speed at which it has been updating the Xbox One feature-set. So far this month, preview members have picked up the ability to wirelessly display other devices onto their Xbox One via Miracast, among other smaller features.

Next up, Xbox One preview members will be able to use the in-built Game DVR to capture gameplay footage at 60 fps.

The news broke last night, as some members of the community noticed that some of their games were recording at 60 fps. Naturally, only games that run at 60 frames per second will support this, such as Battlefield 4, Killer Instinct and so on.

A bunch of users have been uploading clips at 60 fps to their profiles on Xbox.com, but for a quick example check out the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare clip from L'épée Légendaire below:

Note: You may need to enable 720p60 in the quality setting in the player, and even then YouTube may only display 60 fps on a stable enough connection.

If you're unable to watch the embed, you can check out the same clip on Xbox.com here, which also displays at 60 frames per second.

The next logical step is allowing games to record at their maximum resolution or even 1080p up-scaled, time will tell if we're to receive that functionality.

Xbox One owners have a rich roadmap of new features to look forward to in the coming months, including streaming from your Xbox to Windows 10 devices and a rumoured TV DVR function.

Top 10 most anticipated Xbox One E3 2015 announcements

$
0
0

On June 16th, we'll all be a little wiser about exactly how harsh 2015 will be on our collective gamer wallets.

Phil Spencer has tweeted tantalising hints about the Xbox One presentation. We know that it'll carry more first party IP than ever before, something people criticised the Xbox 360 for lacking; we know that Microsoft will announce new exclusives and we now know that HoloLens will make its presence known on the Xbox stage for the first time.

Square Enix and Bethesda both have their own presentations for the first time, and we have mammoth amounts of beloved franchises in development for their first outings on Xbox One and PS4.

I've put together a list of my personal most anticipated E3 announcements, partly to kick off discussions and partly to vent some of my bottomless hype.

1. Halo 5 campaign reveal

This is a fairly obvious one. Thousands of us have gone hands on with Halo 5's multiplayer, courtesy of its brief beta earlier this year. We also know from the prominent #HUNTtheTRUTH viral campaign that the UNSC is vilifying the Master Chief as a traitor. Showing that he's hunted by a new Spartan, known as Agent Locke.

What we don't know is the format the campaign will take. There have been (dubious) rumours to suggest Halo 5 could go open world, featuring space travel and even space combat. But it doesn't seem entirely likely to me that 343i will change the campaign formula too much.

The game's official cover art depicts Spartan fireteams backing both Locke and Master Chief, could this indicate a 4 player co-op campaign? Will it feature an intersecting story like Halo 2's Arbiter plot? All these questions and more will hopefully be answered at E3.

2. Gears of War re-mastered

Recently, a supposed Gears of War beta leaked onto Xbox One, offering players a glimpse at Microsoft's near-future plans for the franchise. Fans have campaigned across social media for some time asking Microsoft to give Gears of War a re-mastered bundle akin to the Master Chief Collection, and it seems as though we may get just get that.

Although the leak seems to suggest that only the first game will be re-mastered, it stands to reason that other games in the series could be ported to Xbox One as well. Expect more information at E3.

3. New IP from Rare

It's confirmed that Rare is working on brand new IP for the Xbox One, finally ditching its role as a Kinect party-game factory. Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, along with all their in-house IP. This most notably includes Killer Instinct for Xbox One owners, but also Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Battletoads and various other iconic franchises that weren't Nintendo owned.

Rare's Creative Director Simon Woodroffe tweeted that Rare's latest project is the 'most fun' thing they've ever done, and the tweet joined comments from Rare composer Robin Beanland that 2015 would be a big year for the developer. Can Rare produce something as iconic as Donkey Kong Country again? Time will tell.

4. Crackdown full reveal

Why have I linked a weird tech demo above? Well, because Microsoft confirmed it to be a cloud-based destruction prototype for the upcoming Crackdown reboot. At the Xbox One's botched reveal, Microsoft touted the power of the ethereal cloud to support processing. Some point to it as a way for developers to hit the ever crucial 1080p buzzword, but thus far, its only been used to power things like dedicated multiplayer servers and the A.I. NPCs in Titanfall.

Crackdown is an open world third person shooter with an emphasis on freedom, and thus destruction. Using the cloud to power next generation physics would silence the naysayers, and could give the Xbox One another exciting unique selling point.

5. Gears of War 4 announcement

We know that Black Tusk Studios is hard at work on new additions to one of Xbox's flagship franchises, and we may get our first look at what they've been working on. Black Tusk Studios has absorbed the IP from Epic Games, in addition to several key personnel and development staff.

Phil Spencer described Gears of War as becoming a parody of itself by the time Judgment hit, which went down like a lead balloon in terms of both sales and review scores. Spencer cited the need for Gears to go back to its roots, and noted that the hiring of Rod Fergusson was key to achieving that goal.

Fergusson has previously been quoted saying that Black Tusk Studios may need to betray fans expectations in order to progress. The comment could have all sorts of implications. I'm not sure if there's a market for corridor shooters laden with convenient chest high walls in 2015, though the team at Black Tusk may be looking to change-up the formula. We may see the fruits of their labour come June.

6. Scalebound full reveal

Platinum Games are one of my favourite developers, and hearing that they're working on an exclusive IP for Microsoft sent my hype levels into overdrive. Platinum are typically known for over-the-top (and often insane) slash 'em ups, famed for franchises like Bayonetta and their work on Metal Gear Rising. Hideki Kamiya will serve as director, who worked on Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.

We know that Scalebound is based on Unreal Engine 4, that the word 'Scale' in the title is a clue to its nature, and that the CGI trailer above is representative of gameplay. Players will have dragon companions and battle giant monsters, but isn't "Monster Hunter-esque". Ken Lobb hyped the game extensively on The Inner Circle podcast, citing its potential to be one of the greatest games ever made. Colour me intrigued.

7. HoloLens

Microsoft has confirmed that HoloLens will make its presence known to gamers at this year's E3. Not only that but that we'll get a better idea of how Microsoft plans to position this unique device to gamers moving forward.

I've speculated on some of my hopes for the headset in a gaming context previously, and with the addition of Unity 3D support there's already a ton of potential out of the box.

Envisage compatibility with Halo 5, displaying ammo counts and other HUD data directly in-front of you. Imagine the distress of a horror game that's set in your own home, where the device detects doors and sets up jump scares dynamically. We know HoloLens is a standalone device with hand gesture tracking, meaning that dedicated casual games would be on the cards as well. The potential is endless in this new paradigm, and we expect to find out more at E3.

8. Square Enix in general: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Hitman, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Just Cause 3

Square Enix has been on a roll lately. The Japanese publisher has certainly swung into my favour by bringing Rise of the Tomb Raider to Xbox One, delivering an open world Final Fantasy and blowing minds everywhere with an insane trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

They've already confirmed that the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XV won't feature at E3, but Square Enix has its own press conference this year, as there's still a lot to talk about.

Expect to get a first look at Deus Ex: Mankind Divided gameplay, more information on Just Cause 3, a possible reveal of a brand new Hitman game, and the Xbox One exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider. Considering Elder Scrolls Online's imminent launch on Xbox One, there's a chance Square Enix could be looking to bring its popular Final Fantasy XIV MMO to the Xbox party as well.

9. EA in general: Battlefield 5, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mirror's Edge 2, Mass Effect 4

So we've had the first details about Star Wars: Battlefront, aspects of which have left some deflated. But, the hype is considerable non-the-less. We should get our first look at EA and Disney's shiny new blockbuster in action come June.

We may also get a first look at Battlefield 5. I found Battlefield Hardline to be solid but disappointingly unambitious, possibly even brand damaging. DICE and EA may be looking at recouping lost ground with a new-gen dedicated Battlefield 5. DICE's Patrick Soderlund described the next Battlefield as needing: "More features. More extras. More destruction." So expect something in that vein, I guess?!

Speaking of DICE, we should also get an update on how Mirror's Edge 2 is coming along. The conceptually solid first person platformer picked up a cult fanbase amidst positive reviews, but left the wider market sceptical. DICE has taken the franchise back to the drawing board and hopes to deliver a more meaningful open-world game that eliminates the flaws of the original and focusses on Faith's past. Lots of hype for this one.

Mass Effect left fans empty with its third instalment, which was widely criticised for a rushed ending (putting it lightly). The franchise has almost been in hiding ever since, despite offering DLC which expanded the ending and mended some of the plot holes. We know that Commander Shepard's tale is over, and that ME4 will feature a new protagonist; we know that it will be 'the same type of game', as in a third person shooter with RPG elements; and we know that planetary exploration will return, including an updated Mako buggy. It has also been suggested that it will take place in a new region of space, enabling it to leave the unanswered questions of ME3, well, unanswered. Let's hope ME4 can live up to fan's expectations.

It's also possible that Mass Effect could get the Master Chief Collection treatment, and receive a bundled port to Xbox One. Some may be fed up of all the re-releases, but I say bring it on. The idea of a re-mastered Mass Effect 1 seems pretty awesome to me.

10. Bethesda in general: Fallout 4, Elder Scrolls, Dishonored 2, Wolfenstein, DOOM

For Bethesda to buy up its own conference space at E3 must mean there are a lot of big announcements to make. The long-in-development DOOM could get a look in, following its reboot after the departure of John Carmack. Those who pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order will receive access to a DOOM beta at some point - perhaps information on the beta's availability will become clear. I'm one of the few who would list Doom 3 among my favourite shooters, so this sits high on my hype list.

Wolfenstein: The New Order could receive a sequel announcement. The successful reboot won the praise of fans and critics alike, with its surprisingly emotional take on the franchises premise - which involves blasting Nazi cyborg mutants in an alternate reality where The Third Reich wins WW2. Bethesda could be looking to capitalise on the franchise further with a full sequel to compliment the stand-alone expansion title, 'Wolfenstein: The Old Blood', which launches today.

A follow-up to Arkane Studios' first-person stealth game Dishonored could be announced, breaking the studio's 3 year radio silence. There were rumours that Arkane had taken up Prey 2, following Bethesda's cancellation of Human Head's involvement. Prey 2 was eventually killed completely, with Bethesda's Pete Hines citing unmet standards. Should the rumours of Arkane's involvement be true, the cancellation of Prey 2 would leave them completely open to work on a Dishonored sequel, which has been heavily rumoured for some time.

By far though, my most anticipated announcement would be Fallout 4. Bethesda is confirmed to be showing off a new RPG as part of its first E3 presentation, with hopes high that this will be a new addition to the wildly successful open-world RPG shooter franchise. There's also a chance it could be a new Elder Scrolls game, following the impossible success of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Either announcement would be welcomed, but all signs point to a return to the wasteland for me.

The best E3 in years?

Phil Spencer tweeted his belief that 2015 will best Microsoft's 2014 E3, which in and of itself was quite impressive. Beyond my 10 picks, we also have an ID@Xbox showcase to look forward to, the possible announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2, fresh details on Metal Gear Solid V and Quantum Break, presentations from 2K Games, WB Games, 505 Games, Techland, Capcom, Activision, Blizzard, and of course, Nintendo and Sony.

2015 will be harsh on the wallet and 2016 even more so. The video game industry is expected to hit $82 billion in value by 2017, and may even beat those projections. Will we be exploring the Fallout 4 wastes with HoloLens strapped to our faces? Tune in on June 16 to find out.
